The belt squeak that wont die!
About two years ago my pulley system started to pick up an intermittent squeak. It seemed to only come around on moist warm days and would be gone before I could get time to figure out what the problem was.
Next thing I know Ive got this NASTY dried out bearing funky squeal that can be heard for miles. Then all of a sudden its gone again.
Then it comes back with a new friend that sounds oddly different.
I remove belt, give everything a spin and find no grind in anything. All my fluids are new and aren’t disappearing so I’m at a total loss.
I’m starting to think fan clutch because the hotter the engine is, the worse the squeaking is.
My AC hasn’t worked for 3 years so it might be that compressor wishing it was even more dead than it already is..
Do the fan clutches have goo in them?
(See goo thread)

Have you ever replaced the belt? Sounds like what mine was doing before I replaced the belt. Mine would only squeek on damp or rainy morning when I had the truck parked outside. After about 10 seconds of running, it would go away.

If you can get it to squeak, heres what you do, pop the hood real quick, get some brake clean, spray it on the belt, if the squeak goes away, wait a minute and see if it comes back, if it does, try it one more time, spray the belt, noise goes away, well install new belt. If noise does not go away? Could be an belt tensioner pulley issue, if the ac has not worked in three years that only means the internal portion of the compressor has not worked in three years, you have a hub bearing and on gm's I have seen a bunch of these go bad causing everything from squeaks to grinding/roaring noises. The invention of serpentine belts made it easier to change belts....or belt, but harder to diag a pulley noise. The belt tension off the pullies might not tell you anything while you spin the different pullies. It might need to be loaded, pressure from the tightened belt to cause the problem, know what I mean? If you have a long screwdriver you can put that up against a part and against your ear and use it as a stethoscope, just don't get that screwdriver up against any moving engine parts. They sell the mechanic stethoscope, you might find it at the zone or autoparts stores....but not to sure. Hope this helps find your noise.
