Question Auto Trans waits to move after sitting for a week

Ok guys, so I am not a transmission guru, but I think I have a problem. When the truck sits for a while (week or so) and I crank it up, it takes about a minute for the truck to move once it is in gear.
Is this the pump losing pressure and causing this to happen or is there a simple fix? The truck has 195,000 miles, but with current prices , it sits quite a bit and I drive the wife's car or the company car. Just kinda want to get it fixed incase its needed.
Thanks!!

The torque converter is draining. No immediate big deal, not sure what the fix is, but someone will chime in. Don't sweat it...

There is a one way valve in the cooler line to prevent this and yours must leak by. The best fix is to put in a shift kit with a new manual valve, this will charge the converter in park. The factory manual valve does not pump any fluid to the converter when the truck is in park. When you shift to drive or reverse it starts filling the converter. You could also just change the manual valve ( or machine your old one) if you do not want to put in a shift kit. The other fix is a new cooler line with a new one way valve.

Or, idle in neutral for a minute or 2 before taking off. That'll fill the converter for you.

They use to say also that the seals in the transmission get hard from the heat over time and don't hold the pressure they use to, so as the truck idles it heats up the seals causing the seals to swell and hold the pressures, since the auto runs on pressure.

I would try a "good" transmission flush, BG products claim that their flushes will make the seals some what supple again, worth a shot.

Mine does this sometimes also. I just put my foot on the brake and shift through the gears a couple of times seems to work.

That will work too, if you don't mind waiting. I want my truck to go now, not in a minute or two. $75.00 shift kit and a few hours and the wait is over and the shifts are better.

Do you have more info on the shift kit or the line? Sounds like something I could do myself and might be a cheaper option than a new tc or reman transmission.

You can buy the shift kit on ebay. If you never done one before it will be very time consuming. The directions will tell you what to do, but they only tell you why when you have multiple choices on the out come. The rest of it you have to have faith that they know what they are doing. On a skill level of 1-10 with 1 being easy and 10 hard I would put this at a 6 or 7. The line is a dealer item. Tell the you want the cooler line with the valve in it, they should know what you want. If they don't call 1-800-new-car1 ask for lee in parts, he will help you.

Is the cooler line with the check valve covered under the factory powertrain warranty?

On a 01 with 195000 miles on it? I hardly think so.

I said "Is", not "Was" and I was referring to my 02' with 61,000 miles which is still under warranty for another 13 months / 9,000 miles. I guess I should have said "Would the cooler line with the check valve be covered under the factory powertrain warranty?"

On startup put in neutral, check your gauges, rear view mirror adjustment, fasten seat belt and drop in gear. 10 to 20 seconds are generally enough to recharge converter. New converter, new valve body, new check valve are not necessarilly answers. Generally will go quicker in drive than reverse. It takes a week to drain down, give it a break.

Heck, my new HTS was built that way...I guess Dusty has a good reason for it, but I normally have a 10-15 sec wait every morning before I can take off.
