auto trans problem
this is a questoin for my dads truck which is a 1999 24v 4x4 with an automatic trans and whole truck is bone stock. the problem is when truck is at operating temp and anywhere around 35 to 45 miles per hour it feels like the trans is searching for a gear( the rpm go up like its in neutral and a couple seconds later it finaly grabs and go's). I havent noticed it doing it if you accel from a stop, it seems to shift fine. it seems to me like it does it when you coast a little and then go to accel again. any help would be app. and also a reminder its not the truck in my signiture. thanks

I've had this problem on two trucks. I did the apps reset via disconnecting the batteries, and I replaced the speed sensor on the side of the transmission. Both trucks shifted perfectly afterwards.

When you coast slightly the converter unlocks and engine slows toward idle. When you accelerate the converter locks and sort of bumps. This may be normal. The RPM sensor on side of tranny could be failing causing tranny to drop in and out of OD also. Cheaper to replace than try to diagnois.

after lots of reading maybee I didnt explain very well, most trucks seem to lock and unlock and lock and unlock and so on so forth. this shifts fine until you coast or slow down like say for the car in front of you to turn, then you get on it again and right away the rpms shoot up like its in neutral and then a few moments later it catches (and usaully shifts hard) and acts like its in gear again and is good until you slow down or coast then resume speed again. also he says in the morning when its cool he has no problems until after work in evening when its warmer out it acts up again. is this still some kind of tc problem or maybe something else like vb or other internals. thanks PS if I can get over to their house and record the problem I will post it but it wont be till weekend.

Interesting you post that description up. Definitely different than the TC locking/unlocking. I'm actually going through that right now myself. I know my pressure governor sensor and pressure solenoid are on their way out. When I replace them tonight or tomorrow, I'll post back up the results. My other thought is could it somehow be related to the bands being out of adjustment... But first things first. Those two are another common problem. Good old Dodge...
