auto tran question

I have not read the manual on my new truck yet. I have a 47rh auto tranny. Do I understand correctly that taking it out of OD puts it in 4th/non overdrive or is it 3rd. It seems when it goes to fourth it almost bypasses and goes right into overdrive. It takes a big drop in rpms. Maybe I need to tighten band. It seems like its skipping non overdrive top gear except momentarily. What do the experts think. Thank you

4th gear IS overdrive. You can't have 4th gear/non-overdrive since they are one in the same. What you're probably feeling is torque convertor lock/unlock and are confusing that with a gear change.

When you are in 3rd your torque converter will lock up and then the tranny will shift into 4th....

If you are talking about the 02, its a 47RE, not a RH.

Yup!
On the 02's Third gear goes from unlocked TC to locked...feels like a new gear due to 2-300 rpm drop. 4th gear (OD) is locked up full time.
Also, 4th gear is a very tall gear (.68 ratio)... taller than even 6th gear on a 6 speed. I keep OD locked out around town and up to 50 mph min! Truck drives much better, with no lugging or gear searching, no drop in mileage that I can see!

So if I am pulling a 6500# camper I should keep out of OD. It is only at 1500rpms at around 60 mph. Seems like it might create alot of heat on tranny in OD unless 65 plus mph. Do any of you camper pullers use 4 OD much and if so at what speeds.

Actually.... the tranny is generating lots of heat when the TC is NOT locked up. Towing a 6500 lb camper in OD @ 1500 rpm is just fine.

Agreed! Level cruise at 1500 rpm would be ok. I just don't like it when it shifts into OD at 40 mph while i'm trying to accelerate. That's the reason for locking it out ... at least till I get to cruise speed!
