Anyone ever get "violated" at the Cummins dealer?
Well coming home at Easter, the temperature gauge on the truck was only reading 75 to 80 degrees Celsius (175 F), that is going into a 20 kph (12 mph) headwind at 110 km/h (69 mph) towing our TT and it was about 18 Celsius (65 F) out. Checked to make sure the clutch on the fan was not locked and it was ok, so I thought it might be the thermostat.
$124.00 for a 190 degree thermostat. I almost peed my pants and my sphincter clenched to the size of a dot on the end of a pencil!!! I asked him to make sure that was for the 5.9 and not some OTR truck. Yup, right thermostat. I also asked if I could get a discount if I told him I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY loved that Cummins motor!!!! He said that was the discounted price as well, it lists for $144.00.
I was going to try and order one from the states, but it is getting REAL close to my busy season. Good thing the stupid thing works, runs just a hair under 90 Celsius (195), empty driving around town empty with the heat on (yes we still need to have the heat on up here).
Between that and my rv dealer not wanting to warranty our trailer, I am almost getting used to/liking being violated...

I paid about $22 from NAPA.
On another note: Cummins Rocky Mountain in Rock SPrings gave me a cam bearing yesterday. They were going to even charge me shipping but lost paperwork or something and the people at the dask just gave it to me. Nice guys that work there. It must just be the corporate a-holes that like to do all the screwing.....

Yea I have had really good luck going to the case dealer for all my 6bt parts. Cummins has over charged me and screwed me on a valve adjustment. Here in Oregon I took my truck to Cummins northwest to get new fan clutch, check and set pop pressures, and to adjust the valves. They called me at 4:45 on a Friday and told me my truck was done. I asked if the valves got adjusted and he told me that they just got back form a test drive and they were adjusting them right now. You can’t adjust the valves while there hot. When I took the truck home I couldn't even get a .003 feeler gauge under the #1 intake. What a bunch of bull ****. That’s just my 2 cents on going to the Cummins dealer.

I got stuck by a 5-star dealer in Las Vegas in 2002 for a $300 and something water pump for my 1992. I knew I was getting taken for a ride and talked to the service manager, but he said "take it or leave it."

what would be the problem with removing the thermostat until he can find a cheaper one? it would prevent over heating..engine might not warm up enough and mileage might suffer. but it should run ok? right?
just some thoughts

how many times........
1. had them replace a set of factory rotors, they were vibrating, they didn't tighten the lug nuts, on the way home I noticed, got mad, turned around and drove in the service dept. as a couple of the nuts fell off when I skidded to a halt.
2. was going to have them align it while being serviced for a recall, they said i needed a new steering box, i laughed and went to pick it up, that steering box is fine and now has 210k on it.
never went back except for parts

That's almost as bad as the $750 bucks for a lower radiator shroud we got hosed on for a Peterbilt.
Cummins has been fairly good to me. Our shop gives em quite a bit of business, so when I go in for parts for my truck, they give em to me at our cost.

Another way we get screwed... F'N assemblys, Leaking oil seal on front hub after doing ball joints, well pressed in seal non-servicible part, new hub and 4wd act. $490 per side.
And what besides greed, is the reason the muffler clamps are welded to the pipes?
