Another guy with the p1693 and a dead truck
So I've did may searches on the p1693. I've had a perfectly good running truck for 180k and today after pulling out the parking lot at work, the truck died 100 yards out the driveway.
The check engine light is on, and I get a p1693 on the odometer.
I am anticipating the injector pump, but could I get a check engine light and the p1693 from the lifp pump failing? I am trying to decide where to have it towed (I left it at work) based on what the cause could possibly be.
I have had a pillar pod with gauges for about 2 years and they are all hooked up except for the fuel pressure.
Any suggestions????

1693 is just a companion code telling you there is a trouble code stored in the ECM. I am not sure about the 01, but my 02 you can turn the key on and off, on and off, then just turn on and do not start. The codes will appear in the odometer. P0216 is the death code for the VP.

I did do the key trick and the p1693 is all I get. I found a pretty decent article about VP44's at BlueChip's site.
One thing I noticed that that the lift pump used to make an irregular sound as it was pumping, but now it just sounds like an electric motor running steady. I know this is a very primitive diagnosis, but that leads me to believe something is wrong with the lift pump. I am going to check fuel pressure before I do anything.
The thing that makes me believe it's the VP44, though, is that it just died. Not supttering, no dead petal, just died.

The lift pump if running weak for an extended period, will cause VP44 failure. The IP is only lubricated by fuel and will "pull" fuel when running. I'm guessing you will need both and as you stated a pressure gauge.

So not hooking up the fuel pressure gauge is gonna cost u over $1,200 not including the lift pump and fuel filter. This may be a lesson to those non believers on a pressure gauge or at least testing four times a year. Not condenming you, cause I did same thing.

Wow...nothing like rubbing it in, huh?

That's not always the case. My friend just lost his IP and the LP was putting out 15 psi the whole time.
