Alternator Rant
So about the middle of last winter(04-05) the alternater on the Dodge crapped out in the middle of the storm,we threw another one on that my dad's buddy had for an extra for his truck. The stock one has been sitting under the seat up until last weekend when we took the extra back down to my dad's buddy. Today my dad dropped the alternater off at the rebuild place in town on his way home from work and the guy told him to call around 4:00 and he will know what is wrong with it. I just called him up to see what he has found,he siad he has no way to fix it becuase the part that went bad is exclusive to Chrysler. I called up the Dodge Dealer real quick to see on a price and the part plus the rebuild would cost more then what a new top notch alternater would cost($230-$320) . I was really hoping I could just get it rebuilt instead of buying a new one being that I am a little low on cash.
The guy said he did some searching and found a company in Alanta that has a refurbished or new one for $256 + shipping,he said the are a good top nitch company.
Does anyone have any good sites the carry the alt. for the truck in my sig.?
Thanks
Jeff

The part that went bad on it would be a Rectifier,I don't have a part number, but I won't be able to get one till Monday. I know he said a rectifier went bad on it and it is a Chrysler part and has to be rebuilt by them[Chrysler].

It is a Denso alternator,I don't think he was yanking my chain if i was him I would try my hardest to get the part to rebuild it,not say I can't rebuild it you need to go to Chrysler. The guy is very well know in town and also the only rebuilder close to here.

Its usually the other way around. Chrlsler dealers parts network do not have access to service parts and the rebuilders can. Foster truck has a brand new one for you for 179.00.

The one at the Ebay link you posted I just emailed the guy asking for shipping cost. it says it is brand new and never used,it has no bids and it is started at $125. The one at Foster truck says it is a 120amp,but when I called the one place in town they said the one they can get is 156 or 165 amp for $265.00 w/ 90.00 core. So what is the stock alternator rated amps?

OK,I guess I will see what the guy says about shippin on Ebay. During the winter it would of been nice to have a bigger alternator, since you figure everytime you hit the plow control there is a 100amps,you also have your lights on along with your 4 ways,a 360degree beacon, heater on low and the radio blasting,so something like 150amps would be ideal.

Just because the alternator is rated at higher amps does not mean that you will use it. The regulator controls the fielding of the alternator. Look on your equipment tag or window sticker to see what yours came with. I just looked on my 3500 and it has a 120 amp. I run a plow, dump bed, salter lights ect. and never have a problem.

The only time i would want a alternator that big is if i was to be running an AC inverter of some type. A 120 amp will do everything that you need.
