Almost out of warranty, what to check?

Hello,

My 01 3500 auto is going into the local dealer for a warranty check before it turns 100K. If anyone has any specific "checks" the dealer should perform, I'd like to make an educated list.
He's charging me an hours labor to put the truck on the computer and check for leaks.

Thanks for the help,

Rick

Unless there is an observable problem they will charge you to check anything out. Your list should be any problems that you yourself have noticed rather than things that commonly go wrong unless you want to pay.
For example, you can't just say "could you check my lift pump?" You would have to tell them you're having starting, problems, etc for them to check it without charge.

Infidel,

Should I ask for them to check the fuel pressure? My gauge sits in the garage, not hooked up yet.
New VP, lift pump and rail replaced under warranty at 70K miles. No symtoms since replaced.

Rick, the fp would be one of the most important things to check but with only 30k on a replacment I would hope it's still going strong. It's your call if you want them to check it. You could probably save yourself quite of bit money to just hook your fp gauge up temporarly without routing it into the cab to see how the lp is doing.

Infidel,

I installed my fuel pressure gauge a week ago. To my horror it idled at 10psi and if I ran WOT up to 70mph it was down to 3 psi. I brought it in to the dealer on Friday and they replaced the lift pump and some of the “O” rings according to a work order.

At about 75k I hooked up a gauge in the driveway and it read fine. I never put it under a load though, and that is where the problem was.

Well it idles at 14psi now, but at WOT it will still get down to 7psi. It is a 2001 with 92k on it so they replaced it under warranty. I have one of the high flow banjo’s installed for the gauge tap. I have the others but have not installed them yet. I am hoping that it improves the WOT performance once I install them.

I should have installed the gauge at 50k when I bought the truck. I came up with every excuse you could think of not to get off my butt and do it. It was so easy I could kick myself for ignoring it so long.

It was the original pump and with 92k on the clock I am dang lucky it hasn’t already caused a failure. The only thing I hope for is that all the stop and go traffic in Houston kept my pump moving enough fuel to keep the injector pump cool. If I was running slow it maintained about 10psi. Anything over 30mph though and it dropped.
