I want the engine sound of an o2 but can't seem to fins a truck thats clean and a manual. Are the 03's sickly quit? I want that clatter sound in my truck. Who knows about what the changes that were made through the engine model years. If an early 03 5.9 sounds as good as the late 02 great.

03 and newer are all common rail fuel systems and are quiet!
For the old diesel engine sound you will have to look at 02's or older!

If you want a CR to sound like a 2nd gen, you need to use a 2nd gen exhaust manifold. It's not a drop-in modification, though. Some fabrication is required.

The manifold change will help with the exhaust sound, but won't get you the rattle that the real diesels make.

Nothing's louder than a '98.5-'02 24v. The only thing I miss about my old '99 is the seats.
