Adding Cruise Control

What are the best options for adding cruise control to an SL model 1999 3500 DRW? If the factory option is the way to go, what parts do I need to round up?

Thanks,

Joe

There was a thread a short time ago where someone installed a factory system, (steering wheel and all) in a third gen and being fully electronic was a fantastic idea. Second gen is a different story as I don't think it's possible to do an all electronic version. (I'm working on it) If it's not possible and you have to use a vacuum servo type then I think an aftermarket system might be easier and better in the long run. That being said, ARA used to make cruise for Chrysler and was generally considered the best all around system out there. However there may be a perfectly good vacuum servo type aftermarket system available. With aftermarket cruise I find if you use engine speed rather than road speed you can use a lower gear and the cruise will work down to very low road speeds.

Have you explored the aftermarket to see which ones are available? If so, can you list the name of the manufacture and sources that you have to find the best price? I do a lot of highway driving and not having a cruise control is a majoy pain in the ***!

Thanks,

Joe

I used to work in a shop that installed cruise along with other things. Back then we mostly installed ARA cruise into everything. It was definitely the most reliable but I recommended it a few moths ago and seem to remember that someone said they had gone out of business. I have been out of the biz for a long time and products change so I don't know whats out there now. I do recommend staying away from any cruise that attaches magnets to the drive shaft, they WILL eventually come off and cause trouble. Like I said before try for something that uses engine speed rather than road speed. I have too much going on right now to install cruise in my truck but I do plan on doing in the near future. Good luck in your search, If I find it is possible to do an all electronic version I'll post my results.

I went to my local dealership and they sent me to the shop in town that has been doing their aftermarket installs for years and they quoted me $299 installed. I will find out more next week.
