Acetone in fuel for better MPGs?
I had dinner with a friend of mine the other night who is a mechanical engineer and used to own a few oil drilling operations. I didnt know this but acetone is a distilate that floats to the surface when drilling for oil. Any ways, he said that I should run 3 oz of acetone to every 15 gallons of fuel for better gas milage. Has anybody ever heard this. I thougt i was pretty up to date on all the little quick gas milage tricks but this one is new to me. He said that all the guys that worked for him on his rigs would collect it and do this with results. Id just kinda like a second before I try this. Iv already replaced my Vp once and not really lookin to do it again ha.

I tried it once at several different mixes. It did nothing for my truck. I was driving the same 100 miles a day on all the test. It may have been just me though.

Even if it did work, do you want to run a solvent through rubber components?
BTW, I love acetone! It keeps me busy replacing fuel systems when they completely fail!

haha I'm with you I use acetone at work all day and it is extremely harsh on rubber/plastic components so I can only imagine the business you get from it being used through a fuel system

I ran this mix in my DD Civic and it helped a little, 5% better mpg on the first tank. I doubt 3oz. to 15 gal will cause a big change in the effects to fuel components. The main point behind the argument is acetone reduces the surface tentsion in fuels so there is better atomization which leads to better efficiency. I drive my civic like I stole it so its not easy to count mpgs when its to the floor most of the time. Still gets 34-36mpg too!

No way that I would be adding any solvent based chemicals to the fuel of a VP truck. I haven't heard one factually based claim that the addition of it does anything good to a diesel truck.

It probably helps, no doubt but yes I do work with acetone as a painter. It dissolves rubber and I won't be using it on expensive fuel system to save a few cents

i personally put all my used motor oil (filtered) from all my vehicles and friends vehicles in my fuel tank and have done it for well over a year. It saves me a trip to the auto parts store to dump it and it amazes all my friends who have Chevy Duracraps.

We used to use acetone as an octane booster to quell preignition in the original Buick 3.8TCs. Little hard on the nonmetallic parts of the fuel system but for a while that '79 Turbo Regal ran like a raped ape!

i have the air dog 100 system, i did this all last year to try it. Changed my oil and fuel filter this past december which was a year from the last and the fuel filter looked brand new inside, but i always keep a spare in the truck just in case. I filter all my used oil that i have and that gets given to me, I just use an old t-shirt to filter. When i add it to the fuel i will normally put close to 3 gal of oil per full tank of fuel and I've had zero probs my fuel presure has actually went up 2 psi and mpg went from 17 in the city to 19.1 (USING A CALCULATOR) on the hwy i get anywhere from 23-best of 27 so I will keep on using old oil as long as i own the truck. Oh and Im a chevy man but when it come to a diesel theres only one and its a dodge by a mile.
