Acceleration problem

Acceleration problem
My 01 cummins with 75000, when driving down the road at a steady 60 mph try to accelerate nothing no response. Pump the foot feet and sometimes it will eventually pick back up the only way I get it to respond right away is push in the clutch hold pedal down to rev up the engine then let back out on clutch then it works. If anybody has any answers I would appreciate it thanks.

Sounds like dead pedal, your VP44 injection pump could be in trouble. On the 24v engines, they are notorious for having insufficient lift pumps, and if they don't provide enough diesel to the injection pump, this could lead to failure. You should try to get a fuel pressure gauge on there, and have it checked out. Replacing the pump(s) are not cheap, preventative maintenance is key. A search on the site will give you tons of info.
Good luck

I have replaced my lift pump and I have low fuel pressure light it has good fuel pressure it has done this for about a year and has gotten a little worse it only does this occasionally usually just when I am getting on it a lot.

Yup, you got the dreaded dead pedal just like my '01 truck has--common problem among 24 valve trucks. From what I gather it could posibly be a bad APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor), but it more than likely is a bad FPCM (fuel pump control module, which is an integral part of the VP44 injection pump.) Turn your ignition key on & off 3 times rapidly without starting the engine and write down the codes your odometer flashes at you, then post them here. This is the codes I got last time I checked mine:
P PCU
P0500
P1694
P1693
Pdone
P ECU
P1693
P0216
Start saving up now; the VP44 injection pump starts out at around $1100.00 plus labor if you have somebody else do the repair. No telling how long it will last though; I've been driving with a bad VP44 for over a year now. Just recently learned what the problem is, and that's where my tax return's going. I'm going with a HRVP44 from Industrial Injection, about $1700.00 but you get about 80 more HP over the stock pump. On the (only) upside, the newer VP44s supposedly have upgraded electronics that shouldn't fail in this manner.

I should correct myself here; I meant to say turn the key on-off-on-off-on. It won't work if you turn the key off the last time.

I've got a question that goes along with this thread--does anybody know if the circuit board in the FPCM is accessible, or is it sealed in epoxy? Just curious if it's actually a repairable broken solder joint that causes the dead pedal...I've noticed my dead pedal sometimes goes away when I hit a pothole, which to me indicates that something is making intermittent contact in there.

Thanks for the help I am currently deployed overseas so I will check this as soon as I get back maybe I can have my buddy check it and email me the codes so I can start saving up if its a vp44 problem

That's how mine started out about a year ago--just the occasional occurrence that had me thinking it was a bad tank of fuel or something. Now, it's not uncommon to drive 30 miles or so on the highway with the accelerator floored (and my right leg getting VERY tired from holding it there) and the truck will barely get to 62 mph or so, losing speed any time it has to go up a slight grade. Then, only after I get off the highway and come to a complete stop, will the problem clear up for a bit. It's especially embarassing when I blow past some slowpoke on the highway, then dead pedal sets in, and HE passes ME a minute later...

Just FYI, the only code I got from mine that leans toward the VP44 is the P0216 code. The other ones are probably unrelated, and I will have to check into them once my main problem is fixed. There are also other codes that denote a bad injection pump, but I can't remember what they were now. Just post your codes here when you get them, and someone will know.

Last time my VP44 failed at 90K, it showed a 0216 code on the odo. Now at 105K, I'm convinced the VP44 is going again (exactly the same symptoms as before), but its only showing the 1693 code... Can any OBDII reader access these hidden codes?

Bad Injector
I get a P1693 code on mine. What does that mean?
Just got back from the shop that does the work on my truck. VP44 is going out, probably from when I was getting the warning light flickering last year. Then, I put in a new lift pump and a feeder pump. The cost given to me is
$1300 for the HD injector pump and $400 labor. Not bad considering it could have gone when I was on the road but not good either since it puts a dent in the wallet. Oh well!!!
