98 CTD Automatic Question

98 CTD Automatic Question
I have 116,000 miles on my 98 Dodge 3500 now. My transmission has been slipping when I hit bumps (or so it seems), so I decide to change the tranny filter and adjust the bands. While cruising and already settled in 3rd or 4th it occasionally feels like it drops out of gear and back in for a second. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on with the tranny?

Re:98 CTD Automatic Question
it sounds like the common automatic problem talked about on this site, your torque converter is locking and unlocking...generally feels like a slight loss of power and your rpm's will jump back and forth around 100 rpm's at the same time...does this sound like what it's doing?? if it is their are some recommendations but let's make sure that these symptoms are correct......also, do you have a 12 valve or a 24 valve cummins?

Re:98 CTD Automatic Question
That is correct. It feels as if it comes out of gear and the RPM's jump a little then back in gear only for a second or so. When I watch it it only jumps maybe 100 or so RPM's like you mentioned. Someone else told me it might be the converter lock up. I have a 24 valve CTD.
