You have a heating grid and it works when the engine and air temp is cold. As the engine gets hot and you restart they don't need to cycle.

As mentioned, these trucks use a grid to heat the intake air. You will find it to be much more effective than glow plugs, and unlike glow plugs, you will never have to replace it. If the intake manifold is 70 degrees or above, the preheaters won't even come on. These trucks will usually start up fine without cycling the preheaters right down to freezing, if necessary.

ah... so I'm a lil behind in the diesel world lol

no glow plugs... check.

how do I check on the #53 block thing? what do I check?

hopefully the fuel filter will be changed on monday, and if that fixes the prob, we will figure out what to do with the trans.. one step at a time ya know?

Mopar, the "53" will most likely be on the passenger side of the block foward above the pan. Kinda tough to see. I have a 53 and I have right about 170,000 miles on it. Don't lose much sleep over it, if it cracks, you can get it cast stitched. Just my opinion though, worst case I'll just get a short block for it and swap her out. Good luck, welcome to DTR, home away from home.

I don't know the name of the company, but the aftermarket shaft for my tranny came from an outfit in Portland, Orygun.

As has been stated, the fuel pressure gauge needs to go in immediately. The VP44, an investment of >$1200 needs at least 5 psi to live happily. Above 8 psi at WOT is even better, but some will disagree. If you are able to pull the lift pump below 5 psi at ANY time it is time for a R & R. I installed a Holley blue on the frame rail, along with the Vulcan big line kit, and cannot pull mine below 16 psi.

As the VP44 (injection pump) on the drivers side of the block below the air horn dies, you will lose power and the truck will be hard to start. Also have the truck scanned for any codes, they can lead you in the right direction. Hope the 5 gear lives a long and happy life after the rebuild, if you are upping the power upgrade the clutch while the tranny is out.

Lots of the eldest 24 valvers on here, we will help you all we can. Enjoy the truck, and let us know how the Duster runs. I am getting ready to run the 71 Nova for some timeslips.

aight... will have the codes checked as well as change the filter.. not sure if he upgraded the clutch or not. I think he did. holy crap, 1200 bucks for a injection pump?! yikes!

duster ran a 11.2x @119.98 mph with 28x11.5x15 sportsman pros, full exhaust, and unknown timing (did the timing by ear as the timing marks were messed up, it was showing 50* of timing). next time it goes out it will have 30x12.5x15 goodyear eagle slicks (it ran out of rpm up top it has 4.10s), and the timing will be set correctly by then as well. I'm pretty **** sure it will run a 10.5 ish, since it ran the 11.2x with a 1.74 60ft spinnin in 1st (he lifted twice) and spinnin a lil more in 2nd.
