6-speed ??'s.....is this normal

I was wondering if this is normal or not....when driving, should you be able to miss 5th gear and have it grind the reverse gear??

And is it normal for me to be sitting still, clutch depressed, and it kind of grinds going into reverse....in a situation where I've been pulling forward, stop and then try to back up.

Just asking because if this isn't normal I want it fixed before my warranty runs out.

Thanks,
-Ryan

it's pretty easy to miss 5th gear if you aren't used to the 6 shooter and it certainly is gonna grind badly when you're running that kind of RPM and MPH....

not sure about your other scenario... it doesn't (and shouldn't) like to go into rewind if you're not nearly at a complete stop... try pulling forward, come to a complete stop then put it into reverse, it shouldn't grind the gears.

First time I drove a 01 6 speed, I tried R instead of 5th. Pretty easy to do really. Grinds pretty bad

Didn't get any grinding going into reverse though.

I used to be scared to death of throwing into R by accident, never have though. You just have to know the "feel" of 5th and R. My reverse can be a little tuff to get into also, when its cold.

Reverse is non-synchronized. First, be sure the clutch is fully disengaged. Second, if you've had the transmission in neutral with the clutch engaged, just "touch" first gear to use its synchros to stop the spinning mass of the clutch disk, input shaft, etc. before going into reverse. This will eliminate any grinding. If you're coming directly into reverse from a forward gear, reverse shouldn't grind if the clutch is fully disengaged.

A bit of wisdom i passed along to both of my sons while "trying" to teach them how to drive a stick...
Once you grind all them sharp edges down it won't make that noise any more

Only hit R once, the same day i signed the paperwork and brought her home from the dealer. Although it does 'pop' into R a bit no grinding if shifting too quickly between forward and reverse gears.

they delayed the production of the six speed when it first came out because of this, i guess they put a notch in or something that stops it from going in because there were a few trucks that had the original six speed and they were going into r on the freeway. my dad had to wait like six months when he ordered his truck because they did this
