6 spd all the way
i had a 5 spd in mine and i hated the 3rd 4th split pulling and empty with the 5 spd especially around town 3rd revd up too much topped out too quick and 4th was just a little too fast too big of an rpm drop. with my 6 spd i run a good chuck of my around town driving in 4th and i down shift on sharp corners to 3rd most stoplights i can idle down to 10 or so and stil throttle right up still in third with no problems grab 4th and run all over town in a good power range i dont hit fifth till im up to 40-45 or so. Also the 6 is so much better for towing and pulling hills 4th is perfect for a gear reduction when you cant use 5th and still maintains good speed my 5 spd ran 35 in 3rd tachd on hills the 6 spd'd 4th will run 45-50 tachd on a hill. time is money, and speed makes time.
as to stop and go traffic i have been driving in stop and go LA, San Fransisco, Sacramento, the east bay area and the I80 corridor in horrible stop and go, yes and an auto would be nice every once and awhile for that but overall the 6 spd still works really well for me.
just my .02 but hey thats what your asking for right.

I have had the five speed and the six speed, in the same truck. Prefer the six speed for towing or non towing. Hey you that hate your six speed, I will swap you a five speed and bell housing, no problem.

IMO if you want to race get the auto - beef it up and be done with it. These manual transmissions are truck transmissions - They are strong & they are heavy - they cannot and will not shift like a Muncie or a Richmond with a Hurst shifter.
As far as the 5 or 6 speed - I really like my 6 speed - don't mind the shifting and when towing don't find myself wishing I had gears more closely spaced. However I do find myself looking for 7 going down the highway empty!
Like someone said earlier - get one you will fall in love with whatever it is and let the bombing began.
Good luck,
George
