5th gear gone but gear/nut are in place?!?
I hooked up to fema camper in MS, pulled it out of fema lot in 1st(5mph speed limit). When I got to the highway and put it back in 1st, when I let the clutch out the truck jerked hard, scared me so I took it out of gear and tried again. It pulled in all 4 gears til I got to interstate and 5th gear was gone. I got home ok with other gears, although it has gotten stuck in reverse briefly a few times. I pulled transfer case, rear tranny cover cause I KNEW it had to be the 5th gear nut backed off, but the gear/nut are fine. When I pulled the extention cover off, 2 gear rings on the rear shift fork below 5th gear shaft came off as well as some broken pieces off some kind of ring(kinda thick). Now I don't know what to do! What else would cause me to lose 5th gear besides the nut backing off? Also, is there a snap ring that goes on that shaft below the 5th gear shaft and what does it look like? thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

I had the same problem. Check your 5 gear syncro. I striped out a big gear in the back of my tranny and the nut stayed on. I dont exactly remember what I took apart but there was a snap ring and behind it was two big gears. I got a used gear from a tranny shop for 15 bucks.

My 5th gear is in good shape. Can I put the extention cover/transfer case back on and run her in the other 4 gears to a tranny shop? There are a couple of gear rings that fell out of the shift fork around the lower shaft. How can I repair the shift fork or whatever is causing this problem with 5th gear? I have to get her running today, so I appreciate any and all help.
