5th or 6th gear for hauling??

Which gear is best for hauling??
My engine has plenty of power to haul in 6th,
but 5th gear is straight through.
So...opinions please!
I had a 92 with a 5 speed and hauled all the time in 5th.
well it got so bad I wound up driving from Wisconsin to Kentucky in 4th.
I heard later on that some 5th gear nut would work loose in the 5 speeds.
That it was best to haul in 4th with the 5 speeds.
I don't want any problems to occur with my 6 speed.
Am I assuming that going with the 5 th is best on hilly terrain and OK to run 6th on open flat highway??

With 4.10s, if I had to run it in 5th, I could never run over 55-60 MPH. Nothing wrong with running in 6th as long as the RPMs don't drop too low and/or the engine isn't lugging. Just watch your EGTs.

How many miles do you have on the rig?
I am running 3:54 gears.

I have 97,000. I also have 3.54 but I have 35" tires, and it still does fine.

I went a hair under 400k on my 6spd it was in a truck prior to mine and had a 80k+ on it then i ticked over 300k on the 6spd pulling 10-20k lbs 75% of the time sold it the the new owner finally had a problem. she was loose, third gear syncro had been out since i first got it and the new owner didnt like how it scratched going inot third. he rebuilt the tranny and replaced third gear and syncro, nothing else had anything wrong, minus the bearings were tired, 3/4 gears both rattled under hard acceleration.

Ran redline mtl all of the tranny's life had +/- 750-800 ft/lbs the whole time. 3.54 gears 315's and or 285's for tires

I see you use REDLINE oil....
I was using AMSOIL in my tranny and started getting gear growl.
I went back to the MOPAR recommended lubricant and it went away.
This is a very touchy issue here....
I honestly think AMSOIL is a superb lubricant, but there is something special about the MOPAR lubricant....
Tell me more about the REDLINE stuff........................

I just picked redline MTL because it met the specs of the nv5600 tranny, my growl was the 3/4 shaft bearings going out. Mopar oil was $20 a qt and hard to come by at the time other than through the dealer the redline was supposed to be supperior and was $12 a qt i was changing lube every 35-40k miles and checking it every 10k for burned oil. I had no problems so i continued to use it. wouldnt argue one is better than teh other just it worked and it worked for a long time and nothing failed on me. PO had 3rd gear syncro going out when he took the tranny out, the redline stuff smoothed it out a little but a burned syncrois a burned syncro, the rest of the innards lived through the next 300k miles in my rig so it worked.

BOT--

I'd say you only need to tow in 5th if the engine can't handle 6th. LIke if you run 315s and 3.54 gears, while towing VERY heavy uphill, then there's a good chance that 5th is what you will want.

OTher than that, I see no need to tow in 5th.

Tow in what gear the engine is happy. Best to keep the rpms above 1800.
