53 block?
Hey Im sure this topic has been discussed before but what is the concern with a 53 block, would my 1998.5 have that number of block? If so what could happen and is there anyway to prevent a problem with them?

i got one and am not worried.....look on drivers side just below injection pump where oil pan meets block, u will see a big 53 stamped into the block....a while back i switched to rotella elc coolant for diesels, might make a difference as far as heading back corrosion but who knows....most block cracking has occured on the 53 blocks for those who tow heavily and on bus applications.....anything u can do, cross your fingers.

My completely stock 99 quad cab had a cracked #53 block. A motor from a wrecked truck fixed the problem. If you have a #53 and it is not cracked a bit of preventive maintence would be to use evanscool in it.

I've seen the 53 casting problem mentioned many times, but mostly concerning modifications.
Today I noticed some drips under the truck. I ran it, did not see any leaks though I looked everywhere. Revved up the truck and voila there are some drips coming of of the stabilizer bar, and behind the pulleys. I'm assuming its a water pump... story for another thread.
What's really interesting is that I found all sorts of threads on the notorious 53 casting. I went out to identify my block and I got a 58L or 581 or something to that effect. There was another post where someone reported a 58 cast number showing under the LP by the pan... Could this be accurate? There are 3 numbers, and the first 2 appear pretty clear "58".
Any one else out there with a 58 cast number?

Mine went at 122,000 miles,,,,, I knew what I had. Just a luck of the draw. I got lucky and found a long block from a fire fer $850 delivered! Swapped my head and Inj pump. Runs great! Did the work myself with the help of my son. Total cost: $1400. Time spent with son: PRICELESS!
