Now I wish I could just go back to what it was. The tranny just seemed to work smoother.

So my question is will this thing loosen up or what? I got 83k on the clock.

Thanks for all the help fellas.
4quarts???? everytime I've done mine and other trucks its taken 6-7liters (liter is pretty close to a quart) Did you check your fluid level in NEUTRAL????? unless you have a shiftkit or better than stock VB the fluid cannot be checked in Park. ( I learned the hard way)

but the manual did say 3.5-4 quarts to refill when dropping the pan. It also says that adjusting the bands PROLONGS the life of the tranny.

After a rebuild I set it and leave it alone. I have seen too many trans damaged by monkeying with bands that did not need attention.

Adjusting bands is not for higher performance. It simply insures the BEST factory performance of the bands. Done properly, adjusting the bands will NOT hurt the trans.

Always check the level on the backside of the dipstick as well.

Well when I checked it in NEUTRAL, it wasnt even on the stick. So I added two quarts, and it is right in the OK zone. So no I have added about 5.5 quarts with the filter. Does this sound right? It does seem to be shifting a bit better. Thx

When I had a stock pan, my tranny always took 5 or so quarts also. Sound to me like you're on the right track.

If you have not adjusted the throttle valve cable, and still have poor shift quality, you should adjust it.

When I changed the fluid and filter with the OEM pan, I put in 7.5 quarts of fluid. The first time that I did it, I measured the amount of fluid that I removed so this gave me a starting point. It took a lot more fluid than my service manual called for. Afterwards I always drove the truck 20 miles to get the tranny fluid to operating temp (180° F) then I would re-check the fluid level which I always kepted at the max full line. If the outside ambient temps were extremely hot, I usually shut the truck off for 30 minutes then started it up to check the fluid level in neutral after shifting thru the gears a couple of times. The fluid level should be the equal on both sides of the dipstick - if one side is higher, the dip stick probably picked up some fluid in the dipstick tube. I have adjusted the bands several times on my truck - just going by the specs in the service manual although I may have backed out 2 turns vs 1 7/8ths on the front band once or twice. It's kind of hard to get 1/8th of a turn just right.

I often wonder who came up with that one, and what difference they felt it made.
