That price was from a top notch shop in Anaheim that specializes in Vipers and Corvettes!
3.73 gears with the 35" tires will net me 3.41 rear end.
4.10 gears with 35" tires would net 3.75 rear end.

I just moved to Southern Oregon from Santa Barbara. Good catch.
I am tempted to just keep my carrier and up my gear from a 3.55 to a 3.73 for the time being.

I'm talking about putting lower gears on a taller carrier, not the other way around. The ring gear for the 4.10's is thicker on a 3.55 carrier than it would be on the 4.10 carrier. Thats for the D80. Like someone posted, the carrier break on the 60 and 70 is at the 4.10/4.56 mark.

I just had my 3:55 changed to 4:10's a few weeks ago. Havent towed with it, but it drives and shifts better. I love them so far. It cost me under $1500
3:55's don't do it in Colorado.

At or below 35" rubber I'd personally put the money in the transmission. If it's already smoked and you add the cost of a basic rebuild to the cost of a gear ratio change, you could have the money for a STOUT transmission or save some money by doing a TC and VB and have better efficiency of taller gears.
Not enough go? Well it's pretty easy to make more power, and your beefier transmission can handle it. And most performance mods will help efficiency even more.
If you have a 4x, you can also have your cake and eat it too. I got the 2 lo kit from Genos, and bypassed the transfer case valve. Put the front CAD on a switch on the shifter console and Voila! I can shift like a twin stick! If you have a BD brake, the valve can sandwich onto your brake acutator valve.
This means that for backing/hooking a trailer you can have it in low range without scrubbing your tires.

I have been running with 4:10's and 285's, and they are a GREAT combo for towing my 5th wheel, but are not so good for unloaded highway crusing. At 75mph on the highway, my engine turns about 2700rpm. Towing the trailer at 60, rpm is around 2100rpm. I just installed an overdrive unit, to give me a more gearing for the highway, I now turn abour 1900rpm at 75mph.
The next diesel truck I buy will NOT have 4:10's!

I totally agree with the 3.54 / clutch and 4.10 / auto combo, but I burned and replaced my tranny last summer. Although I wanted to spend the 3-5K on a SAWEEET tranny I was short on cash. So now I am thinking about front and rear gears.
How do I find out what kind of carrier I have?
