On the back side of the case is a small round aluminum disc that will have the numbers 241 and either DLD or DHD. DLD = light duty, DHD =heavy duty.

I have never seen a 2nd Gen automatic with the 241 DHD. My money is on the DLD.
Like 'Busboy says....Red/Silver Al. disk will tell all.
Nothing to worry about, IMO .... still a very strong unit.

EDIT - I had saved this 2004 post from 'GOTDIESEL'. For anyone interested in transfer case info, it's worth revisiting......
"There is a 241DLD and a 241 DHD, both of which can be found in 2nd Gens. I have researched this and found that they are still both Heavy Duties, but the DLD has no PTO provision, and DHD does. The DHD consequently has a touch heavier gear because of the PTO.
I have had my 241DLD apart recently to upgrade the head gear for a manual conversion. After a few years of heavy power, boosted launches, full 4X4 drags, big tires and so on, everything looked absolutely brand new. Even the chain was tight as can be!
I was going to upgrade to a 271, but since this one has done me right, I'll leave it alone.
They only have one little flaw, and that's the output shaft bearing retaining snap ring. They tend to break, allowing the shaft to walk inwards, which can be damaging. There is a fix available at any trans shop that will rectify this, and all that is needed to be taken apart is driveline removal and output housing removal. Good luck and don't worry about DLD's."

thank you guys i will have a look see at what it is and thats great both are strong units, and from the post about the snap ring breaking, what is the symptom of that if any while driving. I feel slop in mine from take off and the rear end has a half inch or less play which is in spec so im thinking its a t-case issue and the slop goes away i fwd.

I agree they the 241 is excellent. The one down fall I think is the extremely small amount of fluid they contain. There is no room for any kind of leak, and any leak should be taken care of ASAP.
