Yeah, they're going to rub. I had 265/75's on mine and they slightly rubbed. Had 25,000miles on them, and the black outer layer on the sidewall was rubbed off in a line all the way around. They didn't look like they were rubbing, i.e., they weren't touching when I looked at them. Problem is that they rub where the tire touches the ground. Even without a load on. 285's are 20mm wider, so they will probably rub heavily. You might look into spacers, but I don't know anything about them. I've got 235/85's on now. They're skinny, but after seeing the inside sidewall of the old tires, I got a little worried and wanted to be safe this time. I've got D's on my personal truck front and rear and have never had a problem with them, and I've pulled everything with my truck.

I heard a while back that 255's were the widest you could go without spacers, but I've never seen anyone with them. Glad to hear that they don't rub. I'll probably check out some 255's in a year or so when I need new tires.

Re:285s/75 on dually???

I went to the 255 / 85 because of the height. It was the tallest tire I could find that the sidewalls would not rub on the rear wheels (outside of going with Ricksons). With 4:10's I wanted a taller tire.

The tires I have are Dunlop A/T. They are 32"+ high and the tread is 7 1/2" wide. With the Alcoa rims the sidewalls of the rear tires are about 1" apart.

I have only put about 2k on the tires - so I can't really say how they will hold up - but so far so good. They balanced well and there is not a lot of vibration etc. going down the road.
