24V Valve Clearance / Adjustment
When reading the Haynes Manual to remove my VP-44, I thought since I had the valve cover off to also replace the injectors I was to check on doing the valve adjustment.
There is a small paragraph in the manual, in that section that states, "after 1999 Dodge/Cummins does not require the valve clearance to be adjusted" or something to this effect.
Is this a factual statement? do not all years require valve clearance adjustment?

Not to discredit anyone's opinion or feelings on these forums, but I've never really understood why there's so many guys who insist on checking the valve clearance on these engines on a regular basis. They're simply not exposed to those kind of rpm's and spring load conditions to justify needing that much attention. Maybe if someone has an engine cranking out outlandish amounts of power and is subject to risky hot EGT's often then.....maybe.
I'd check them at around 150,000 miles and adjust them "if necessary", as some dont even need to. Then I'd call it good for a long long time.
Here's what my factory service manual states even.....
STANDARD PROCEDURE—VALVE LASH
ADJUSTMENT AND VERIFICATION
NOTE: To obtain accurate readings, valve lash measurements
AND adjustments should only be performed
when the engine coolant temperature is less
than 60° C (140° F).
The 24–valve overhead system is a “low-maintenance”
design. Routine adjustments are no longer
necessary, however, measurement should still take
place when trouble-shooting performance problems,
or upon completion of a repair that includes removal
and installation of the valve train components.

Thank You, Thats much more concise than what the Haynes manual states, and I have at least 172K on the truck now, I was fiddling around with the rockers and such after I took off the Valve cover so I can change out the injectors after installing the new pump.

Once again, I have to second Katoom's opinion on this. The mechanics that I have talked to about this say they rarely see issues unless the trucks have been modified and usually from the owner adjusting them prior........
