24v newb with LP problems

I am used to working on my 93, so the 24v is a weird animal to me.

My dad had been complaining of low power on his 02 W2500 5spd with 90K miles for quite a while. He would never take it anywhere to get looked at (can't blame him, the nearest decent dodge garage is 100 miles away since Daimler pushed out all the small dealerships over the past few years.. but I digress) so I finally picked up a fuel pressure test kit.

I put it on my Jeep just to check, and the gauge works fine. On his I hooked up to the test port right on the VP44 and only get 1-2psi at idle, so looks like the LP is almost completely dead. Pressure should be 10-14 right?

Can I get one of these at the local CarQuest or is it a dodge only item?

The truck is stock so I don't know if I need to bother with an aftermarket setup or not?

I am sure this question has come up a couple hundred times, but digging through the search on 44k dialup takes to long

Had some time to dig allittle

Found this, good idea?:
http://genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?...=VULCANRELOKIT

Also found this thread talking about buying a "Campaign" pump from Cummins. What is that?
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ange+lift+pump
Says in here I can get one from the cummins dealer in KC for $64

Also reading it appears that a bad LP kills the VP44? If so I suppose that is next since this has most likely been like this for a long time.

Advanced Auto parts sells the Holley blue electric pumps. Just mount one on the frame by the fuel tank & don't even waste your money on a stocker....they are unreliable.

I would say it's closer to the thousands.
As a former fellow kansan (emporia) you are heading in the right direction. You can also do the relocate and big line kit direct from www.vulcanperformance.com which works really good even on stock engines, since the stock design is a very poor one.

Geez, I sure hope your a K-State fan.

i wouldn't even drive it with pressure that low, lightly touch the gas and pressure will be zero.

Ditto on the Holley Blue. Cheap to buy (I think I paid $90 at Autozone with one of their cards). I cobbled together my own relocation kit. The Vulcan kit does make it easier in that is saves you parts scrounging time. Were I to do this again I'd get the Vulcan kit and either a Holley Blue or Carter 4601HP. Good thing about the Holley is if it does go out, you can find a replacement pretty much anywhere. Mine never drops below ~13 psi.

Dumb question though, how is your fuel filter? Install a new one and check the readings again.

Fuel filter is fine.

If I had to guess he has been driving it like this for a year

So I don't need a regulator with the holley pump? If I just walk into a parts store they will know what it is? The nearest autozone is 60 miles but carquest is right near by (yes it is BFE up here). EDIT: Just thought to look in my Summit Racing catalog and they have them in there for $133

So I should get the "big line" kit instead of the basic one, jumps the price quite a bit. Guess I will get an order in for that and check around for the Holley pump today. I notice they have an electric fuel guage on that same site. Might get him one of those and a mount while i am at it.

PS: I am a K-state, KU, and NU football fan

Just use the Holley Blue on the truck. The regulator that comes with it is a decent paperweight.

You only need the 'big line' kit if you're going to bomb the truck out. I think the regular size lines will support up to a bit under 600 hp.

I'd recommend a gauge. I like electric since you don't need to plumb fuel into the cab.

You can either use a Holley Blue or a Carter 4601HP. Basically, you want a pump that will give you 15 - 20 psi with enough flow (I forget the rating of those two).

I think I laid out my Holley install here: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=167510

Needed to get the truck going, so just swung up to an orielys today and got one from them. After swapping it in I get 14psi at idle and with it reved up to 2500 it showed 11.

Really didn't make the truck run any different though. Seems like a pooch compared to my mildly tweaked 1st gen. Is there anything else I should look at or can reset? Or is the injection pump probably on the way out now?

Mine was a pooch when stock, 25 lbs. boost although you might check the fuel filter, 11psi pressure is kind of low if you are not WOT going down the road.
Check for trouble codes by turning the keyswitch On-Off-On-Off-On then look at the odometer.

no codes I checked that earlier today, forgot to mention it.

Filter is fairly new, just a few months old.

The truck does not have as much get up and go as it did when new for sure. My truck accelerates way faster in 4th with 6500lbs behind it than this 02 does with nothing right now.

No boost or pyro on it so I am kind of blind as to what is going on. On the 12v trucks there is a port right on the intake I use, nothing on this 24v. Going to try and talk him into getting a westach fuel pressure guage and a combo boost/egt and a pillar mount.

I just don't hear the turbo ever start whistling on it. Still acts like it is not getting any fuel to make it kick in.

Any other thoughts?

I was checking over the boost system and all the boots look good. I got to thinking later that my 1st gen has a mechanical AFC on the injection pump to inject more fuel as boost comes up, if it leaks no power. What does the 24v system use? Could there be a line off or a bad sensor there?

Sensor trouble will set a trouble code.
Back to lift pump fuel pressure, what's the fuel pressure at a 60mph punch?
Some folks have reported improved performance
after wiping off the Inlet Air Temperature Sensor.
How about the air filter?

no Idea on the pressure when driving. My test gauge only has a 1' hose on it.

Mine uase to until I added some greasegun line extensions & fittings and a needle valve from the auto parts store, sealed them with Permatex non-hardening.
