2002 Smoke On Startup
i have a 2002 2500 ctd 6spd, it has had a dead pedal for several months, but i have still been driving it, and just dealing with the dead pedal on occassion. seems that if i keep it above 1/2 tank of fuel that i have less problems.
my most recent issue has been that when i start the truck after it has been sitting a few hours, it will run @ 1/2 power, and smoke tons of white smoke. also has a miss. it acts like a powerstroke with bad glowplugs.
once i have driven it a couple miles, it all of a sudden has full power and takes off like normal.
what is going on?
thanks, chris

key on/off 3 times, look at odometer display on dash. that will display error codes. I bet a paycheck you get P0216. that's injector pump timing failure. Dead injector pump.

i know that i have the pump code, but what i was wondering is if that is the same problem that i am having during startup? with the smoke, and missing?
any ideas?
thanks, chris

Below is a pic of the code I got in my old truck. The injection pump was replaced soon after. Courtesy of Dodge.

okay, thanks guys. being as the truck is out of warranty, i wil be going at this on my own.
the truck has ~130,000 on it, with the lift pump having been replaced at 100k.
as cheap as the lift pumps are, i am not sure if i should go ahead and swap them both out, or just do the inj. pump.
where is the best place to buy a fp gauge?
who seams to have the best price on an inj pump?
thanks, chris

Hey Andy505: Get that pic off this forum before one of the moderators catches you!!!
People have to sleep at night you know! That's the scariest photo I've ever seen.
CC...
I'm not sure if Kevin at MWFI has the fuel gauge but I know he turns a lot of the Fuel and Injector pumps. He sells them as a kit. Depending on the type of gauge you want you can find them on e-bay, dieselmanor.com, the DTR store, etc etc... Might as well check with wherever you purchase the pump to save shipping and just get everything together. Larry sells a nice Autometer Console Gauge pod, or you can pick up the SRT pod at dodge if the only gauge you plan on getting is a FP gauge.
Good luck buddy. At least you got a resource like DTR. Its the next best thing to a warranty - perhaps even better.

Mine did the same smoke and choke thing before it finally succumbed to VP44-itis. My trick was to turn the key off and on again while driving, this usually stopped the dead pedal, especially once it was warmed up. Eventually I got the dead pedal on a regular basis, even after it warmed up. You can drive it like this for as long as you can stand it, but remember someday it may decide to put you down, and Murphy's Law says you will be at the furthest point from home possible
