2002 NV4500 5th Gear Nut?
A friend at work has an '02 with the NV4500 and tows horses (don't know how heavy he tows). I don't think he reads these boards so he probably isn't aware of the 5th gear nut issue. My question is this: Is the 5th gear nut falling off while towing heavy an issue on the 2002's or was it fixed by then? I would like to let him know if he should think about having it looked at. (I'm also trying to tell him to check his fuel pressure )
Thanks,
~Rob

New Venture did improve the 5th gear nut in 2000(I think), but it is not a fix, they still have issues with it, just not as often.

Usually you can drive in 4th.....the tranny operates normally except for the "missing" 5th gear.....the gear typically stays on the shaft but simply slides far enough out of place as to not mesh with the counter gear....

I thought they fixed it as well untill I was driving down the highway and I went to shift from 4th to 5th and it came loose. I wasn't under heavy acceleration or anything and I never tow in 5th gear. I drove around with only 4 gears for 500 miles. Just get it fixed right and you'll be good. That web site is excellent for fixing the problem. Good luck.
