Desert Diesel,
Let us know if you can get the 3.73 gears for the Dana 80. I am sure that there are several of us that would be interested in the swap. Also see if there is a matching set for the Dana 60 front. If ya got a 4X4 you have to match the fronts as well.

Yes you do have to match ratios, unless you wanna kill your t-case.

I only have the 2WD, but I think I might do a SAS next spring, and convert it to 4WD.

I can get the 3.73s for both the 60 and the 80. The 80 R&P though, runs about $700 and is genuine Dana Spicer stuff.

Why go to the trouble of replacing the gears? Why not just add larger tires and change your effective gear ratio that way. It would accomplish all you want to do for less $$, less hassle, and plus it would make your truck look better and perform better offroad.

Re:2001 Cummins 2500 Transmission Questions

Quite frankly, for several reasons. My truck was purchased for basic truck uses such as hauling stuff, and towing. All of which is done on Freeways and highways. My truck was not purchased for looks, they were just a little added bonus.

I did infact increase tire size from the little 245s to a larger 265. I think... [undecided] Can't remeber what size BFG AT I put on there, I think it was a 265. But the point is, yeah, it's larger than stock, and it's as larger as I can go with out more rubbing than I already have.

Re:2001 Cummins 2500 Transmission Questions

I bought my truck to use it as well. I was just saying it is easier for me to spend money on something that makes my truck look better than something that does not if they are both going to do the same thing. I have 315 75 16's on my truck and it has great highway manners. During the winter months I drive about 200 miles a day half of that pulling a trailer and I expect no problems from it.

What kind of rubbing do you have - track bar or fenders? If track bar wheels with different backspacing will help that and if fenders then a lift will help. I guess on a 2wd it is not that big of deal to swap gears but on a 4wd you have to do it twice and to me it would be easier to increase tire size making whatever accomodations are necessary.

As far as power goes my truck has 3.55s already and then plus the bigger tires so I am guessing an effective ratio of around 3.3 and I have no problems pulling and it is nice to have lower rpms at highway speed. With the low end torque these trucks have you don't have to be as carefull with high gears.

Re:2001 Cummins 2500 Transmission Questions

Hmm.. I have to agree with BD on this one, bigger tires. Seems to me like going to a 285 or 305 on the REAR would not cause problems, in fact I think the 285's would be around a 390 gear and the 305's would bump it up to about a 373 there-a-bouts. If you have the 16x8 rims then you shouldn't have a problem doing this and if you dont like the way it runs... change your tires.
Seems someone on here qouted a price of around $800 for 373 or 390 gears. Testing my memory on this but here goes. With the 354 gears you can go to a 373 with out changing carrier and if running a 410 you can only go to a 390 without changing carrier. Good luck, you'll figgure it out.

Duane.
