2001 24v White smoke
Hello All,
My brother has a 100% stock 24v 5 speed. He has a recurring problem. His truck will pour white exhaust from 1500 - 1900 RPM. It does it with the engine temp cold or fully warmed up. It will do it sitting still and reving the engine or under load while moving. Outside temp above 60 degrees. I know that this usually fuel burning in the exhaust pipe. But I am not sure what is up with his truck.
Is it a stuck injector?
Thanks guys,

ok, thanks, I told him to check the codes already. He said there was no codes. I can't vouch for him tho. I will research how to adjust the timing. New VP is like 2K right? Would be going to a P pump cost that much. I guess I will go look at Piers.
If anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

ok, I pulled the codes. 1693 and 500. I guess he went on a trip to Montana, and after going through contruction at a slow pace the truck had no power. He could only get up to about 45 MPH.
He got power by stoping at a auto store and bought a new air filter. Then for the first 30 minutes after words it had no power and blowing white smoke. Then the power came back for the rest of his trip. This was pulling a 27' 5er from Utah.
Also when he sees the white smoke the worst is when he idles for 30 minutes and then drives normally.
He is at 96K so I guess he will need to take it into the dealer and see what they say.

just my thoughts, please take them with a grain of salt. from the symptoms (started acting up after possibly taking in some dirt/debris, white smoke at higher rpms, no power...) is it possibly the turbo? won't oil from the turbo blowing into the intake cause white smoke? and isn't that rpm range (15-1900) about the time the turbo starts to spool up?
like i said, just brainstorming here.

Transfer pump
OK guys bear with me. Have an 01 Dodge with Cummins engine. When the truck was 6 months old had transfer pump replaced. Had the pump checked again, ideling is ok but under load it drops pressure. But the drop in pressure is within Dodge's specs. Now knowing that white smoke is the sign of a complete failure. Do I wait for it to go out or should I replace it now saveing the price of a new pump? My warranty on the engine is up around 1 Mar. One final question. Does a chip that I have on the engine have anything to do with the pump loseing pressure?

Welcome to the site Florida Bums,
I believe I'd remove any chips first then complain the white smoke to the dealer before your warranty runs out. The computer needs to be scanned but you can turn the keyswitch (don't start the motor) on-off-on-off-on then look at your odometer for a PO code. Write it down and we can discuss it.

Swap the pump, fix the problem-- it's that simple (and disappointing).

the reason I ask is my LP has gone out (intermittently just won't run) and I noticed today that if I shut it down when the LP is in this won't run state (meaning about 6-7psi at idle)... the next time I start it, rather than the usual black poof, I get a small white one. does that make sense?
