1999 24 Valve Auto Trans.HELP!

99 Dodge, transmission will not shift out of low gear, called local dealer to ask for help and they said change out pressure sensors on valve body-did not help. Taken tranmission apart and can't find anything wrong, any suggestions ???

I have a familiar problem my tranny wont shift out of 3rd nor will it down shift. I am facing an electrical issue. Try turning your ignition on/off three times to see if you are having any tranny codes on the odometer. Then go from there!

Is your tranny not shifting out of first gear? Does it do it all the time or just once in a while? Could be your speed sensor on the overdrive unit of the tranny. It is on the drivers side, they are known to fail.

'99s don't have the "three key cycle" option.

mine does the "not go out of 1st" thing a little bit.

It has a code of P0720, speed sensor circuit malfunction.

I did a post to find out where or what this sensor is, but nobody has responded.

I see there is an electrical plug that goes into the rear end.

But someone above mentioned a sensor that is in the overdrive unit of the tranny (where is this one, anyway?) . So now I am going to get confused if I have to figure out more than one unit to replace.

The one that is located on the overdrive unit is going to be on the driverside. When installed it will be angled about 45 deg. towards the ground. I need to do alittle more research on the rear end speed sensor. I know that you can purchase the speed sensor for the overdrive unit for around $25 from the dealer. I will see what information that I can retain on the other sensor and get back to you.

I have a 00 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 156,000 on the oringinal fluid that did the exact same thing, code said it was the speed sensor. I pulled it out and it was covered in fine metalic powder. I cleaned it off reinstalled it and it shifted fine again. The sensor is magnetic and therfore clings to the slurry of metal that is in the trans, On a side note I have since changed the fluid and filter(it was pitch black). Still bucks every now and again but still gets me all over.

I am going to try and find that one on the tranny in the morning.
I am guessing mine will also be covered in that fine gray metal particle stuff.

I cleared my code and it came back immiediately, so I know it's not intermittent.

Whoops, I made a mistake.

My P0720 COde is the OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR CIRCIUT MALFUNCTION code, not just the speed sensor one..

Is there any difference.??????? DOes the OUTPUT on the front mean anything significant?

My truck was doing the same thing, setting a P0720 code. I replaced the "output shaft speed sensor" and problem solved. The sensor is easy to change. It is located near the rear of the transmission, upper right side, just to the front of the cross member. Cost me less than $25.00.

That is the Rear Wheel ABS Sensor. They go bad too, but are a piece of cake to replace. Most of the sensors for the mechanical things are magnets and for whatever reason randomly croak. If you count my transmission swap I have probably replaced every stinkin' sensor on my truck in the last 2 years. And yes, I have even replaced the battery temp sensor.

It was the sensor in the tranny (near the drivers side rear like you said)
It was $23.99 at Autozone.
They had two sensors, BOTH WERE JUST CALLED SPEED SENSORS..However,
I could tell that one of them looked like the one in the differential and the other looked like the one in the tranny. So I replaced the tranny one. (The one that looked like it went in the rear differential was about 44.99, so I thought I would try the cheap one first.).

Took about 60 seconds.

Code is now gone, And the problem is also gone too.

Thanx for all your help.

Glad you fixed the problem, was it the sensor on the overdrive unit?

Well, it was towards the back of the tranny. So my guess is that it was on the overdrive part, but that's only a guess.

Since I don't know what the overdrive unit is, all I can do it tell you that it was near the back, and hope that helps.
