170k miles and 5th gear is says goodbye
Driving in to work today my truck suddenly loses 5th gear! Has anyone pulled one of these transmissions before? I'm not looking forward to it, that box is huge, even without the transfer case attached. Ideally, I'd rebuild it myself but the task of dropping and installing it is very daunting.
Any tips, links or advice to rebuilding this transmission is much appreciated. Otherwise, if you know any good shops in the NorthWest that'd be nice, too. Oh, and what clutch is recommended? The truck isn't bombed and will probably never see much more than 100 ft/lbs over stock.
Thanks!

very common to lose 5th gear with the nv4500. do a search. there is a mod to reinstall it and retain it. there is a nut that keeps the gear on the shaft, it just gets loose and the gear slips out of place. no damage generally occurs. you can fix it yourself. do the search. as far as the clutch, south bend con ofe.

happened to me around 130,000 miles. You can actually pull the back pan off while its still in the truck. We threaded it back on with a lot of loc-tite and wrenched it down as tight as possible. Hasnt failed me again...
