Sounds like the same problem that I have, getting the LP replaced as I type.
Mine would go into the dead pedal between 50 and 60 mph, just like the throttle had been disconected. Then on monday it did it when trying to cross an intersection. I have always put off on the gauges because other things seemed to have more priority, now that I will have to replace the IP also, the gauges would have been cheap insurance.

The way I understand it the LP (lift pump) is what pulls the fuel from the tank.
The VP44 / IP (injection pump) is what boost the fuel pressure right before your injectors.
In most cases the IP fails because the LP fails?
The FASS replaces the LP which solve both the IP and LP failing?
If so it seems like the 400+ it cost for a FASS is well worth it.
How accurate is my info above??? (ive only had a CDT for 5 days)

Pretty good --The FASS is considered more reliable and able to maintain higher pressure than stock - I think it also separates and air bubbles and sends them back to the tank.
It can prevent overheating due to lack of fuel - you could still plug the stock filter. Even though I had 6 lbs on the IP side of the filter I got a code 0216 when it partially plugged, so there are no guarantees - just reduced risk. I am still using the stock pump and info I provided is from reading on this site.

Just a comment. If you chose to install the fuel pressure guage on the source side of the filter for whatever reason by all means at least install a 5lb low fuel pressure warning light between the fuel filter and the injection pump. One bad load of fuel can completely clog the filter so a new fuel filter is no guarantee of anything. Good Luck!
