0216 at 68K miles

On Thursday, I had believe I had the dead petal syndrome. I'd goose it, with nothing happening. It had zero power and seemed to stumble a bit. I had a 130 mile hihgway drive, and the mileage was a bit less than normal. On Friday, I ran the AC. It felt like the AC was actually taxing the motor. It's FLAT, no zip at all.
Friday night, ran the codes. 0216.

I have an aftermarket warranty, so I'm hoping to have the IP and LP replaced underwarranty. The truck is also under 5 years old and only has 68K miles. Would the Cummins warranty cover it also? I might have a better service going through them. It will be done at a dealership.

Am I going down the right path? Does this really fit the bill for an early diagnosis of a dead vp44 and lp? I know others are running for a long time with the code, but I'm towing 1400 miles at the end of the month.

02HO, QC 4x4, NV5600. Bone stock.

If you haven't done so already, hook up a fuel pressure tester to the port on the VP-44 and see what you are getting. If I am reading right, this is your second VP in 68k miles?? On my 02, I made it to 48K then the dealer replaced it under warranty. A year earlier, the dealer replaced the lift pump also. As soon as the VP was replaced, I installed a Vulcan relo kit and added gauges. When I was running the carter lift pump, I would replace it when ever it went below 10 PSI. This got old and I ended up installing a FASS fuel system. Right now, I have about the same millage as you, and it is running better than ever. It seems to me something else is wrong or you are running around with bad lift pumps killing your vp.

Let us know what your fuel pressure is.

HTHs,

Joe

Unless they changed something between 99 and 02.... you could very well still be under warranty.

Run to the dealer. Your 5 year/100K warranty should cover that as long as you bought the truck a little later than this time of year.

I know the 03's were starting to hit dealer lots in late July. I had one ordered in May and it was one of the first in our area.

Those symtoms and the death code.... IP DOA Get it in to the dealer before your trip. They will probably change out your LP to an in the tank model too in order to warrentee the IP. Don't ask me how I know this.

Another update: I ran it last night for about an hour to get home. It seemed to run fine, but flat. And then...at 70mph on I-95 south of Baltimore...nothing. 15 seconds of butt puckering dead pedal. Outside temp was about 75-80.
Ran the same distance this morning @ 65mph. No dead petal at all. 40 degree temps.

Truck is stock. No gauges. Purchased in Jan and didn't even have a chance to get gauges (all my funds went to a downpayment).

OK....

Hopefully they will replace the LP and IP for you. Make sure you insist on replacing the LP too. Some dealers etc. will think they just need to replace the VP-44 since the code just points to the injector pump.

Then, make sure you get a FP gauge on it. A FP gauge is critical equipment on a second gen 24V. If you need help with the FP guage, just ask...

Good Luck.

I will be picking up a FASS today at a local shop. I have a great relationship with my dealer, so I'll have them install it with the VP44.

I talked to my warranty company. They will only cover the VP44 if it's bad. No luck on the LP, and they will NOT cover the VP44 if the LP took it out.

They will provide X number of dollars for the VP44. They may ask for a reman be used. What are the drawbacks of this? If I could upgrade to a new one (at my cost), would it be worth it? What about going all the way to a HRVP44?

I believe they are all remans, I don't think Bosch is manufacturing the VP44 anymore. But I'm not sure.

If you still have DC factory warranty, you need to go to a dealer ASAP. You will have 10X more hasseles trying o deal with an "aftermarket warranty" company. trust me, been there done that.
