02 H.O. Fueling followup
He all,
Just thought I'd finish the story from a past posting with details and $$$
Problem was my 02 6 speed with 91.5K miles started surging on the highway.
Started as a slight surge (about every 2 seconds) and got worse as time went by.
I tried the easy stuff like the fuel filter and looking for leaks. My fuel pressure
gauge was reading fine so I did not think LP. I posted and got some good info
that indicated my VP44 was maybe going. From the archives I learned how to
get the codes and found I had a P0216 which is the kiss of death for the vp44.
I took the truck to Weststar Dodge in Monahans, Texas. The verified the p0216
and informed me it was covered under warrenty. A week later I'm back on the road.
Not long after pucking the truck up I noticed a lack of power and the milage was
down 3-4 mpg. Checked the codes and again found a P0216. Brought it back
to Weststar. THey called and said that the code was a leftover as their mechanic
did not clear codes. On the other hand my LP was bad. THey checked with DC
and covered the LP under warrenty as well. Now I have the truck back and all
seems well. Lesson learned for me. Check the codes yourself and double check
after service. Have to say the dealer did pretty OK by me.
thanks to those who gave good advice. Of related interest there were 4 CTD's getting new VP44's at the same time. They thought that was unusual and had a mechanic doing not much else but vp44's at the time. My pump seems to be a rebuild and has a big yellow "do not remove" type sticker on it to prevent tampering. I also called several dealers to get the cost of a new LP to double check Weststar and all said the price of a new LP was $304. Before I could call cummins they decided to warrenty it so I never called and got their cost.
Related as well is that my FP gauge never uttered a peep. It is a BD x-monitor and it has as far as I can tell never worked right. I sent it back and they say they will fix it but so far I've gotten mostly the runaround. If anything interesting happens (good or bad) I'll update but right now I feel that they screwed me and would avoid the x-monitor if I had to do it again.
just my $0.02
