02 dodge blowing white smoke

i have a 02 dodge 2500 5.9, i have just changed the vp and lift pump less then a month ago but the codes still show when i turn the key 3 times. recently i have had problems starting the truck like it wouldnt turn over all you would here is a click and that was it. had power to everything else so i tapped on the starter and it started. i have a new starter coming. now i also sometimes have a dead pedal for 10 seconds or so when first started and white smoke comes out when i hit the gas sometimes. nothing is done to the truck it is stock any help would be appreciated as im newer to diesels. thanks

Also has the code p0230 I'm going to get the codes cleared and see if they come back. The lift pump is bypassed to the starter key I believe

If you're losing coolant and puffing white smoke, id say there is coolant getting into the cylinders. head gasket or head issue.
Id flush coolant and put in correct stuff. I don't believe DEX cool is meant for these engines.

Dex and green used to make cottage cheese in the cooling system.

I think you need to get this one professionally diagnosed, if it is losing coolant and white smoking, good chance of real damage.

Did it get hot?

I agree with patdaly....

Your starter probably just needs a $6 set of contacts...get the heavy duty ones...

As for the white smoke, well a blown head gasket would be my first guess, however, I would be careful starting it after a while of sitting, you may have a cylinder full of antifreeze.

Trying to start in this condition will really get expensive.

Nope, won't throw a code, do you know how or where you lost your coolant?

Any chance your water pump is leaking out the bottom?

No I have no clue about the coolant there was coolant in the radiator but none in the clear tub thing. I haven't noticed any leaking but will look tomorrow. Would it be safe to drive or should I let it sit till taken to a shop. I opened the radiator and started the truck and it didn't bubble also oil is dark and looks good

I wouldn't go far without knowing what is going on. Around town is probably OK, just watch the coolant like a hawk.

For your code 0230........

Well started it today to go to the store and had dead petal bad and white smoke just barley hitting the gas but after 5 minutes of running no white smoke and dead petal witch felt like hours was only a couple seconds. Have an appointment at 10 with dodge tomorrow. Isn't dead petal a sign of vp problems? This one isn't even 2 months old and pat thanks for the replies I greatly appreciate it

Turbo boots in good shape?

A bad one/loose one can rob power and cause white smoke, weird its intermittent though...

The lower driver's side one on mine was getting cut by the sheetmetal back when I got my truck in 04.........
