'01 2500 rear diff.-Correct fluid & capacity

After reading a long and to me, confusing thread on the correct fluid & amounts for the rear axle on the newer trucks...I still do not know what type or how much fluid to buy for my truck. I think the manual recommends 75W90 but does not say how much it takes. I don't do a lot of towing...just want to change the fluid because the truck has 114,000 miles and it has probably never been changed. I have the auto tranny and 3:54 gears. Thanks in advance!

Re:'01 2500 rear diff.-Correct fluid & capacity

According to Dodge, it takes 7.75 pints. I just did mine last weekend and it took just over 3 quarts. I used Amsoil Series 2000 75-90. I don't tow alot either but I believe in the benefits of synthetic oil and because I live in a cold climate, I want it to stay "pourable" in very cold weather. You will also need to know that the torque for the cover bolts is 30 ft/lbs because there are no drain plugs in our standard diff covers.

amartinson is right. Torque them to 30-35 ft lb I put amsoil 75w 140 in mine because it gets really cold hear in the winter and i do more towing in the winter also. My front and rear diffs take 3 12 quarts.

Silverram,

I could practically throw a Garrett turbo and hit you from my place in Brooklyn Park, MN. Nice to see another Minnesota boy among all these Canadians ehh!

Evil...I'm sure you are right. I've only done mine once and did not have any clean fuel on hand. Seemed like it took forever to get it up and running.

Are those torque numbers right? 30-35 lbs.? That seems way to much for those little bolts. When I changed mine I stopped at 20 lbs.
