Your Opinion

Well the first thing I have to say is HELLO EVERYONE! This is my first post here I have a few questions to ask of you .Although my frame says I have a '93 Cummins truck (I don't) but I have been looking for awhile.I just sold my old '82 GMC 6.2 and she was an awesome truck. It had extreme reliability (almost 700,000 K and still going well) And great fuel economy. All said and done this truck was basicly an over sprung 1/2 ton
I could tell you about the race I had with a Cummins truck but you already know the out come
Here are my Questions
1) What does a W250 Cummins equiped weigh?
2) Was this truck available with an optional GVWR?If so How Much?
I have an OLD Alaskan 10 ft camper that I like to take camping with the family
3) would the 250 do or should I be looking for a 350?

Thank you in advance for your help

A helpful thread. My '93 manual says GVW for a W250 is 8,510, a SRW W350 gets you to 8,700 , a dually W350 is good for 10,100.

Thanks for the reply! As I want to go to B.C. this summer they are really cracking down on overloaded campers
I know my Alaskan weighs alot and with the truck having an 8510 GVWR It gets me nervous as to what the unit will weigh with all gear in .....Maybe the 350 might be the safe route?

6,900 lbs (no idea what the metric conversion is) over the scale at the dump.

the W250s have one ton axles so weight shouldn't be a problem with your camper. it sort of depends really: are you hauling it around a couple times a year for a few hundered miles? if so, the 250 is fine. in fact, the 250 is fine if you want to haul it around every day. but if you're hauling a lot, a dualie rear end makes the going a lot nicer.

EDIT - tires make a big difference too. if you get a 250 but still want to tow a lot, do yourself a favor and get 10 ply "E" load range tires.

Yup, 250's have the '70 axles too. But, remember they use lighter brakes and springs.

I have a 1992 W250 and I carry a 1992 11'3" lance camper. When I bought the camper it weighed 3018lbs dry. With all my stuff in it it probably weighs close to 4000 lbs. I also tow a boat trailer. I have load range E tires and have never had a problem as long as I used good brand tires and kept them at 80 psi. I wouldn't say it's scary to drive but I do have to be careful about stopping distance and fast corners. A duelly setup would probably be better with this much weight. I also have to use air bags on the rear leaf springs and they are inflated to their max rating. This is a pretty heavy setup so if your camper is lighter you are better off. If not I would suggest a duelly setup. I am looking for an aftermarket duelly setup if anyone knows of a company that does this.

So, glad you are here on the site. Welcome. Did you feel bad losing to that Cummins.

Like mentioned before, if you do use the camper a lot. I hear ( I have W250) that the training wheels (dually) help a lot. Mainly the wind blowing against it doesn't effect it as much as a single wheeled truck. I am sure though that the W250 would handle the weight without a problem. These trucks are built right and tough. Enjoy this site, it is a wonderful place with a lot of information.

Actually I was empty and he had roughly a 27plus foot 5th wheel and the go was off the lights.......It was downright embarassing
I knew that the gen 1s were tough trucks

As for the camper I know the 250 would hold it but I need to play safe as far as the GVWR sticker on the goes .I've heard of people getting weighed and sent back
Not what I have in mind for camping

you wouldn't have a problem here in the states. i dunno about oh canada! my home and native land. unless their rules are flat out kooky, i can't imagine it'd be a problem.

easyryder;
Welcome to the best disel forum around
I would go w/ the 350 DRW they are best suited for top heavy loads such as the overhead camper.

Also new to this place- looks like fun! Years ago I hauled one of those type campers with a well bilt SRW. Stopping wasn't too bad (you had to stay alert) Today though, no one let's you maintain a safe following distance, so you may be in trouble there. The MAJOR problem is cross wind. I was young er and dumber when I hauled mine and I knew potential disaster coul be just around the corner. Some of the newer slide ins are lighter in weight, but top heavy and wind could still be a factor. QUESTION: How much harder is it to load a slide in with DRW?
I may know of a 1st gen. auto trans if you decide to take that route.

Well Guys I don't believe what I'm about to say.I've been searching for that elusive cummins truck and every one that I've gone to look at has been badly abused and put away wet. Unfortunately I have a limited budget . During all this action I came accross a ford f250 powerstroke full load well looked after ..............For now I guess I am a blue oval man. Sorry all I love the truck and I got a steel of a deal(It's a full load XLT) But I still will read these pages 'cause they are a great resourse
Thanks for all your help!
