Yet another egt probe question.

I have guages on order and they will be here soon. I know the pre turbo location that most people agree works the best. In the collector, to the back of the center divider. I have read that for some reason (possibly casting restrictions) the front 3 cylinders run hotter on the 12V's as opposed to the back 3 on the 24's so the probe would be more accurate if placed on the front side of the collector. What is everybody's opinion of this? Has anybody heard the same thing?

The #1 intake runner is flat out horrible. However, when Cummins 5.9's burn pistons, most of the time #6 is the one that gets roasted. That's why people put the probe out back.

Thanks for the info. I guess the poor coolant circulation to the back of the block is more of an issue than the intake restriction up front. Does the coolant in fact dead end in the block somewhat? I heard that Cummins has a part to rectify the poor coolant flow has anybody heard anything about this.

There's a water outlet that can be installed at the back of the block, but not many guys have done it.

Dang as usual I learn something new every day here. I'll have to look into this. Just a pipe plug in the back or what? It wouldn't hurt my feelings to plumb in a line here to circulate better

Well that's something I would definitely do. I only see working this truck harder as time goes on.

Rear freeze plug on the back of the block has a machined surface with tapped holes for the part. Search around on the site, the part numbers and pictures are here somewhere. From what I understand the trans has to come out to get enough access to it.

I feel its needed to add this, theres no real differance in where the probe is placed be it pre or post turbo. You probably get a truer overall reading from post, since you are truely reading a combination of all six cyl. Big rigs have run the post for years. Just remember to subtract the differance.

The rear freeze plug mod won't work in a 1st gen, that part of the block is up against the firewall.
