In August of 93 I rolled off the lot with a brand new W250 extra cab. To say that the wife was unhappy about it would be the understatement of the century, she got over it, kinda.

18 years later the wife is on her 4th car and I am still driving the dodge.

Last year we moved my brother from Reno Nv to Ashland Ky.

5000 miles in 5 days with a truck and trail load, part of which was my brothers Crown Vic on the trailer. I was a little upset that I never got more then 16.5 mpg on the way over and never over 20 mpg on the way back.

When I told my dad and little brother that they both dropped a load. Their new Dodges have NEVER seen 20 and only rarely ever see 16.5.

My truck is old, its noisy, it rides rough, it has war wounds and is just generally ugly, most people wont even get near it let alone lean on it or even touch it.

Its mine and I love it and so does everybody else every time it rattles up to rescue them from some problem.

He went to pick up a horse with a small bumper pull trailer and got about 9.5! Another guy we know has a '04 F250 with the 6.oh-no. It broke down (again) on the road the other night and left them stranded with a trailer on the side of the road until they could get someone to pull them home.

And yet my old, uncomfortable, and unsophisticated 1st Gen, with 182k on it, gets me anywhere I want to go reliably. My buddy was sick when I told him I got 18+ towing a trailer with a Yamaha Rhino and a Sportsman 500 in the bed and unloaded can easily get north of 20 if I can keep out of the smoke pedal. He was even more sick when I took him for a spin in my old truck that has more usable power than his 6.7.

So let's hear some stories from the rest of ya'll. Let's hear some tales of making your friends and family upset when your raggedy ancient truck gets their new wonder-truck out of a bind.
my dads 06 3500 diesel get 17.5 around town

intimidation factor

I live in a very affluent area and may very well be the only dude driving a 91 1st-gen

I sit higher than even the Humhoe (Hummer/Tahoe) drivers, I've got big mean bumpers and I make A LOT of noise when I pull up

my rig gets everyone's attention and few have the nerve to cross my path

just installed a novelty horn that sounds like an ocean liner when I really want to wake up a slumbering commuter...prolly illegal, but let them bust me

I finally convinced myself that I could afford to buy a new truck, so now I have a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel on order.

But I'm still not quite sure that I can afford to own a new truck. It always makes me nervous to own something I can't fix and can't afford to throw away.

So I'm keeping the '91 1/2 D250 I bought new. I've always maintained it pretty close to new standards mechanically, although the body is kind of horrible by now. It's plenty good enough to use on the farm and I can always put it back on the road if I have to. (Like if the new one has to spend a month at the dealer's).

If I get really ambitious, I may even get the body work done. Over the last couple of years, I've picked up a flatbed, a pair of fenders and a door just to keep my options open.

I suppose I could have waited a few more years to replace the truck, but I thought that if I was ever going to buy another new one, I'd better do it before they got even more complicated. Plus the old truck is 2wd and I'm getting too old to get out and shovel the few times every winter that I get stuck getting out of the driveway. And I wanted a crew cab. Everybody probably remembers that they weren't available in '91. In fact, even the cab-and-a half wasn't available with a diesel. They were all made in Mexico and the diesels were all made in Warren. It wasn't until '92 that they started shipping diesel engines to Mexico. If you have one of the last of the Warren-built trucks, that might be enough reason right there to keep it.

Of course, pressure from the ol' lady was another factor in ordering a new truck. Maybe if I get the body work done, I can tell her it's a 2015 and isn't it funny how they look a lot like the first-gens.

I have 173xxx miles on mine and got back from Greenville SC to Camp LeJeune ( 305 miles) and the guage finally fell under the 3/4 mark when I hit stop lights in town. And still have the power to yank a 05 Chevy 2500HD, and a Ram 1500 Out the ditch when a snow storm Shut down the base. I love this old beast! Had it's minor problems but what 19 year old mechine don't?

I fell in love with mine even more when today when it started within 3 seconds in -7f temps. I have no grids and forgot to plug the wall end of the extension cord in. I was very shocked and happy at the same time.
