Have you opened the hood on a 1st Gen? You have access to all 6 cylinders, which is a plus. All the under hood space makes these trucks very easy to work on. With proper maintenance, these trucks will go well over 1 million miles. I personally believe that a 12 Valve is the most reliable engine out there, for a pichup at least. Whether it's a 1st Gen 12 Valve or a 2nd Gen 12 Valve, you can't beat their reliability.
It's also pretty fun driving a brick, getting better fuel mileage than the newer more "aerodynamic" trucks.

my whole truck is anti-theft. one look at it and it doesn't look like its worth stealing. it still has that classic look and its about the only thing u can average 25mpg with a lift and 33 inch tires.

I love mine because it is pure. It doesn't coddle you or try to do anything other than be a dependable, hardworking truck. It seems that the newer trucks have been built for a softer crowd (heated leather seats in a truck?). No offense to later generations.

I just like 1st gens because they are easy to work on, simple and reliable in almost every facet of their design.
1.) Their shortcomings have been corrected mostly from boards like this getting together sharing knowledge and trying new things.
2.) They're cheap/economical to operate and maintain. They do the job they were designed for without complaints!
3.) The design spans back to 1972 meaning that the backbone of these trucks was engineered in the 60s when things weren't econo engineered to barely outlast their warantee - these 1st gens aren't "throw away" vehicles, they are timeless.
4.) When you own a first gen, you're automatically out of the "keeping up with the Joneses" rat race and you don't have to cringe whenever a new improved version of your truck comes out in the new model year and/or when you see ads for a newer/better truck come up for sale cheaper than you bought yours for. None of that matters.

I like my 1st gen (Grumpy) because:
It always starts
It's FUGLY
It always runs
It can pull your house down
Gets around 19mpg
It's FUGLY
Nobody wants to steal it
I can run it on WMO
Did I mention It's FUGLY?

^^^^ These trucks are about as complicated as a hammer and anvil; anyone with a decently stocked toolbox and a multimeter can keep one running until the grandkids inherit it. Replace the wear parts, keep the air, fuel and oil clean and (someday) a decendant will look in the maintenance log and wonder what great grandpa was thinking when he scribbled "2 turns on fuel screw, moved pump to head".

I don'ty understand the turning complaints, my 93 turns shorter, than my dads 2wd ford. Now if you want to talk turning radius, drive one of the late model binders. The one I had took a five acre field to make a circle[laugh
Now back to the ist gen. The ready for anything look, is the best thing, plus they will run, even if the ecm is fried, if you can get fuel to it anr the starter will crank it'l get you home. I like the bench seat, and on decent roads the ride isn't bad, and as some one else said, they will run on about any flamable liquid, as long as there is some lubrication to it for the pump and injecters.
