What's the best degreaser? and removed engine questions
Just wondering what you folks have used to get all the grime and oil off of your engines and transmissions?
I can get a pressure washer.
What should I plug up or not spray? (I just pulled the engine today)
Also
Is there anything that I should do or check on the engine and trans while the engine and trans are out? I'm going to adjust the timing and fix the belt tensioner but anything else I should look at?
I'm also planning to do a trans rebuild (727) and install a better TC.

I've found that the spray cans of Engine Brite work fairly well with a pressure washer, but you do have to let it sit for 10-15 minutes to properly work. If its fairly heavy I'd spray let it sit and spray again and let sit for another 10-15 minutes and then have at it with the pressure washer. Just be careful of gaskets and seals. If you can, use a pressure washer that heats the water, I found that the heat really helps melt off the grime.
Also be very careful around the injection pump and injectors, spray from a distance and scrub with a brush if need be.
Hope this helps

I use Simple Green, I use it full strength in a spray bottle I spray it onto the engine and where ever it is extra dirty, let it set for about 5 minuets and then I hose it off with a garden hose and a nozzle.
After I wash the engine I then dry off everything using compressed air making sure all of the electrical connections are dry. I then check and reapply dielectric grease into the connections and grease the throttle linkage to the injector pump.
If I am at the coin-op car wash I will use the high pressure spray and wash it back to the transmission.
If it is real dirty like sometimes after major engine work I will use my Karcher Steam Cleaner, it is a diesel fired commercial unit, 4000 PSI live steam.
I also use a product called Mean Green sold by Waxie that is meant for commercial use.
I wash out my engine compartment every time I wash my truck so it is never very dirty.
Do not use spray on Oven Cleaners, as it is very caustic and will attack the aluminum and magnesium parts of the engine, injector pump and transmission leaving a dusty rough look to all of your shiny parts.
Be careful if you use high pressure, 4000 PSI will peel the insulation off all of the wiring and rubber parts.

Go to the dish washing Isle and get some dawn power dissolve. Works awesome.
It will eat off carbon deposits even. Kind of expensive though.
If you want to repaint the over cleaner like mentioned works well.

So, outside of covering the BHAF before the hose down, anything else to be concerned with under the hood? It appears I have several leaks and would like to clean everything up in order to pinpoint the exact causes... asside from wanting it a bit cleaner for GP.
