what keeps worm gear in transmission in sync w/ drive shaft

is the worm gear, in the t-case that drives the output shaft that drives the vss, supposed to be locked in w/ the drive shft or what. i been havin a problem w/ my speedo and i can stick my finger in the hole and spin the gear around the shaft while in park is that normal.

i dropped the drive shaft and and tightend the nut as much as i could but i can still spin it.

The speedo drive gear is splined to the output shaft.

got that
but what keeps the worm gear from free spinning around the output shaft of the t-case (ar trans.)
i removed all the vss, gear reducer, the dive gear that goes into t-case stuck my finger in the hole and can rotate(easily) the worm gear around the t-case output shaft.
should you be able to rotate that or no

No, that gear shouldn't turn if the shaft isn't. I think it's splined on there (I've had mine apart but you know, brain like a steel sieve). If you pull the yoke and output bearing (little aluminum housing has to come off, 5 bolts) I think you can reach in there and slide the gear off the shaft.
