Blew up the old battery in the plow truck trying to start it. It had been on the battery charger for a few hours and when I turn the key, the terminal sparked and the whole top of the battery blew off.
I spent a bunch of time with lots of baking soda mixed with water in a spray bottle. I will swap in another battery when it warms up in two days. I don't really have to plow the driveway anyway it is only about 10-12 inches. Luckily we all run 4x4 rigs and I am not expecting anything from the UPS guy.

I blew a hole in the bottom of my battery once but I didn't know it until the next day when the car wouldn't start. I hosed off everything under but it left a heck of a mess. Glad we have the maintenance free batteries now where that don't happen nearly as much. I'm also glad that was an old battery. The replacement only cost me $21.00 back in the mid 70's before the Fed destroyed the value of money.

My left side window wouldn't roll down anymore so I decided to fix it today. I made sure the switch wasn't bad then I pulled off the door panel. I found the plug that connects the motor to the truck wiring and put my trusty Tripplett VOM in the plug and activeted the switch and got power both directions so the motor had to be bad.

I took out the motor and took it apart. The brush assembly was just about shot and the brushes were hanging up in the holder and weren't making good contact with the armature anymore. I shot them with WD-40 and cleaned it up some. Then I put a few drops of gun oil on the bearing and put it back together. It works for now but It'll need replacing soon unless I can find some new brushes.

Years ago, I was working on an old Ford L9000. The kind of Ford that started on 24V and ran on 12V. I had to weld something up on the bed, and I didn't unhook the batteries (poor decision in hind sight). But as fate would have it, it was winter and the truck was just jump started to pull in the shop...any how a few blasts from the MIG welder and I woke up on the floor. Apparently the batteries were "gassing off". Last time I ever welded on something close to the batteries.

Got the KDP taken care of last night. It was inset a hood 3/16" yet but there is peace of mind knowing it and the case bolts are done. Now to finish buttoning it up and then order the stuff for hydro boost.

Drove up to Victorville this morning to a tailgate gathering to sell rocks and minerals that the wife collects. We sold a but and then this lady offered to buy everything that was left for a decent sum so we sold out rather than load it all up and cart it back. The truck got 19.5 mpg for the round trip. This is with the VE set to stock and the timing on TDC.

Will advancing the timing a bit get better mileage? Everything else being the same.

I have a full tank now so hopefully I can pressurize the tank and crawl under it with my spy camera which is on a flexible fiber optic thingamajig. Tomorrow that is.

Hi guys, I was messing with my impala SS and found that it wouldn't start, no crank. I found the fuse box contacts are almost all rusted and and need a thorough cleaning. While searching for a good way to get the rust off, I came across this video of removing rust by electrolysis:


It won't help me with my contact problem, but looks like a really cool way to save some unobtanium type of parts. I have decided to use my dremel on the fuse contacts, unless anyone has a better idea. The video is about 10 minutes...Mark Edit: I was just looking at the fuse box from the SS and it turns out that each of the fuse clips are also connected to a spade connector on the other side of the fuse panel. I figure that I can make a harness of wire, connect all of the terminals together, and use that as the cathode (I think that is correct) side for the negative clip. It all adds up to very small surface area and should clean up pretty fast. When I do it, I'll post up some pics, that is if the Arm and Hammer washing soda isn't sold out ...

Hi Edwin, It was nice to meet you two, I hope all is good. I think 19.5 is pretty good, that is about what I get and my pump is pushed all the way to the head, everything else is stock except 4 inch exhaust, and, Oh yeah! There's no water in the antifreeze ...Mark

motor mounts, resealed the Vacuum pump and Power steering pump. side cover gasket that turned into CF first I Call Cummins NW portland told the guy on the phone what I need he tell me all in stock I get there the next day to get my parts O we don't stock those parts hear but they are at the warehouse come back tomorrow BS I not driving 40 miles one way and you cant go to the WH and pick up parts anymore I tell to ship them to me next day I get 2 big boxes one for the gasket and one for the 4 grommets what BS is that, I told GAL in parts I need all the parts to do the job she told me all I needed was the gasket I told I think I need more than that can I look at the parts book so I say I need the grommets she sells me 4 I say I think I need more she tells that what the book say I need ok. I get the pump and all the other things off the side of the block you need to take off and find out I need 6 grommets I call Cummins and tell the Parts guy the P/N of the Grommets tell him I need 2 and some other parts I need I get there the next day he F that up good 1 grommet and some parts I don't need got the parts straightened out will have to ship them to you. at least the few parts came in a small box. next get the pump back on and timed and adjust the valves O what Fun Ken

started reassembly after doing the pin the other week. Got the crank pulley and fan remounted as well as set the spacing for the CPS. Going to pick up a belt plus fluids tonight. Hopefully get it all back together over the next few evenings.

4.5ish qts of 5w-30 in the g360 ( the other .5 qt is on the garage floor)
4gals of antifreeze ( decided to go all in and try the 100% thing)
fresh serpentine belt (not green regular old black)
