Are you positive the linkage is right? Not just the shifter linkage but the throttle cable too? Did you adjust the bands?

I wish I had a getrag it is a a518 linkage is correct I haven’t gotten to try and tighten bands yet that will hopefully happen this weekend

My A-518 got wonky and sloppy. Found that the front 2 screws holding the valve body on had gotten loose. No other trouble.

I just adjusted front band got a fiat bit of adjustment but it shifts to second but when trying for 3rd seems like neutral reverse feels strong I’m at a loss

I just noticed that you just installed the transmission. Did you rebuild it?
Toughest concept I've had to teach field computer engineers in training.
1. You walk up to a running machine.
2. You do something to it.
3. The machine now does not run.
Conclude: It's what you did.

No I got it used and never got to drive it from the truck I pulled it out of.i agree about your motto if it worked before you touched it lol

the transmission sat in truck and never mover for 5-6 years

Had a good wrenching day today. Fix a sheared spring shackle bolt, made sure all my front spring bolts were torqued to 95 ft-lbs, installed new Spicer non-greasable U joints in the rear DL, changed the oil in my front axle and fixed the exhaust hangers Diamond Eye sent with the exhaust.

Feeling very accomplished. 😁

I rolled an old W-250 club cab 4x4 with a Getrag into the shop today to see if I can save it this winter.

The back ground on the truck is... My good friend I used to cook with almost 20 years ago wanted a good solid 4x4 manual 1st gen after driving my 12V powered '85 crew cab back from a long road trip to pick up a Mopar in almost Pa..
I found this truck for him 6 years ago. He drove it for a few years doing almost no work to it, then it sat in his yard for years. His life changed, his dad past away and his Bar-B-Q business took off, ETC. I bought it from him this spring to try to save it. It had not run in three years, but with a basic check up and a fresh battery, it fired up and drove on my trailer.
I finally got it into the shop and on the lift to give its good once over this afternoon.

Big things to fix, right now are:
No front driveshaft installed, so I barely got it into the shop in 2wd as it is dumping snow.
The steering box plate is badly cracked.
The electric wiring looks super suspect and a bunch of the dash / lights do not work.
The front spring, rear shackles are up against the frame and need attention.

Bonuses are:
It is very solid and basically rust free as when I found it for him years ago it was fresh out of Cali.. Unfortunately almost every panel is dented and the interior is pretty throttled too. At least it has a lot of character.
Runs and drives and brakes as is, just in 2wd.

If I get into fixing the old girl up this winter which is very likely, I will start a special thread for it.

Well a quick update on "old bar-b-q", as my friend used to call his '92. He used it to tow his pig roaster and smoker to gigs and it is a red truck.
The reason the front drive shaft has not been installed in 6+ years is the front axle U-joints are so badly seized up you can not spin the wheel with the hubs locked and the wheels turned. Looks like a front axle rebuild is in need.
It will also need a crack addressed by the steering box where the intercooled truck seem to really like to crack on the upper edge of the frame. It is almost like it has a crumple zone ripple in the frame. I see cracks starting there on many a '91.5--93.
I don't have time for that right now so it is getting backed out of the shop.
Charlotte and I did get to check out all the fluid levels on the powertrain and grease whatever zerks that would actually still take grease.
It is a great starting point to a solid project, it just needs more time and parts than I can give it right now.

I at least have a plan of attack now after getting it on the lift and having some time to really check it out. Even with almost 400,000 miles on it, it is pretty darn nice and worth saving.

Spent today with a soldering iron. Homemade EGT revision 2 is in the works. It was working fine, but added an ambient light sensor and some programming to dim the lcd in low light (night time) because it was blinding from the ashtray where it was temporarily installed.


Cost about $30 in parts and it rounds to the nearest 5degrees, turns yellow over 900, and flashes red/yellow over 1050. Run by an arduino and a type k thermocouple.
