This outboard is killing me over here. I brought down a tiny little envelope with 100 bucks worth of parts in it.Those little plastic pieces that retain actuating rods cost 11 bucks apiece and there are 7 of them. I really like to bring old equipment back to life, but this one may be possessed...Mark

Well your boat is older than your truck...

How did you get back to shore? All our boats were older models and I dreaded the dead in the water episodes. If I couldn’t resurrect we’d have to bum a tow.

You can't see it in the pics, but there is an 8 hp kicker motor on the starboard side. It has saved my fanny about 5 times. The boat is a '75 Starcraft and the offender is a '73 115 Johnson 2 stroke. It was always extremely reliable, but it spent 3 years outside during the construction of the house. It was covered up, but the climate here is so harsh, that it just broke down. I have been trying to catch up with it since. I was given some too late advice to cover the power head in grease when it has to sit for a bit. Hey that rhymes...Mark edit: It is a pretty cool boat, solid aluminum, it has 2 marine radios (1 submersible, portable) , fish finder, EPIRB unit, Sirius sat radio, 65 gallons of fuel capacity, not counting the 6 or so 6 gallon tanks that I can strap onto it, nearly queen sized bed in cabin, ac inverter, Cole Hershey switch that separates double batteries and an 80 watt solar panel on top of the bimini. If I can't fix the motor, I'll put one on that I can...

Yeah... My wife does the same thing

Lol.. JK

Usually caused by old fuel. This,is why I only use non ethanol fuel from cans in my small engines, or I run them dry if they're gonna sit for more than 30 days.

That ethanol crap destroys seals non metallic floats, fuel lines

I have been using Marine-Stabil fuel stabilizer for years in all my fuels and it keeps the ethanol from breaking down parts so I know that the fuel is not the issue. And I have done a fresh fuel swap as well with the same result.

Well, I don't know what happened to the text above, but this was the problem. The bendix had jammed itself into the flywheel, probably on the first startup, and this was putting such a drag on the power head that putting it into gear caused shutdown. I'm pretty sure that nobody here would be surprised that I have a spare starter and even a spare flywheel. I'll have her out for testing in a couple of days...Mark

Dang. Glad you found the problem and it's an easy fix. What body of water you go to?

Got to work and coolant was dribbling out the front. Looks like it must be coming out of the relatively new Gates water pump I guess? Not that old and maybe 10 thousand miles on it as I replaced it when I did my head. Maybe running the bad fan bearing for so long stressed it?

I wasn't too bummed as we had just driven it to Columbus and back so at least it decided to go just 11 miles from home. So I filled the rad and drove back home, temps never went above normal.

Anyway, got another Gates from NAPA and going to do that today...

The big one with all the salt in it, the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). Yeah, A trick that I do is to replace good, working parts so that I have an extra, so the original starter is now back on it. The Sea of Cortez is said to be the breeding grounds for the world. The California Grey Whales come in here, as do the Orcas, Great White Sharks, Hammer Heads, Albacore, Yellow Tail, Yellow fin and just about all of them. The area up close to the shore is very shallow, but there is a submarine canyon around 20 miles out that is about 4000 feet deep. There is something for everybody...Mark

Some cool vehicles in Kino

One of the things that I really like about Kino is that there are quite a few vehicles that I have never seen before. It is also cool to meet people from other places. I saw these 2 rigs in he past week or so, so here they are:

The first three are a pair of Russian film makers that have travelled from Vladivostok Russia and have travelled all the way from there, through Africa North to South, across the Atlantic to Argentina and then North all the way to within a couple hundred miles from the USA. I asked them if they were going to the states and they said that they could not get a visa. The vehicle is a modern reproduction of a 60's era Russian van. The other is (I think) a Mercedes Benz Unimog but they were still asleep, so these are the best pics I could get. We had 2 Unimog Brush pumpers back in the day on the PFD. The were a real kick to drive...Mark

There are many different styles of Unimogs, but this one is very similar to the ones that we had:

One of the ones we had, had super crawler gears and it could climb a wall. I roved through FS33 one day, where they had one and I asked the Captain if I could take it out for a little "training". He said of course, training is a good thing. The Cave Creek Wash was right across the street. Boy, was that fun ...Mark

They look like expedition vehicles. Cool.

My brother has been trying to talk me into a Unimog with the loader and backhoe as a farm equipment purchase...

How safe is that area? Looks/sounds like paradise.
