If the cam gear broke while the motor was turning... I would have to think there was piston to valve contact no?? Valves stop moving and pistons still turning???? I'd be worried more damage was done than what you see in the pics...

The cam was checked on a lathe with a dial indicator,It is fine! My next question is how do I set the pump timing on a ve pump is there some marks on the inj.pump gear that I can line up wih the cam gear. The only book I got covers a p-pump on newer trucks! Oh , the engine is on top dead center! This site is awsome some of the folks on here are very helpful!
Thanks for all the help so far!

You need a tool to put your dial indicator in the end of the pump, it's available cheap from a lot of places that sell VW diesel parts (same pump).
There's a link to a video in the sticky that shows the procedure. Basically, with the engine at #1TDC, install the indicator with at least 5 mm of travel. Turn the engine backwards until the indicator stops dropping. Zero the indicator and turn the engine forward to TDC. Move the pump until timing is where you want it (factory spec was on the data plate) and tighten the pump down. Remove the indicator and adapter, replace the plug, and you are done.
