what is an air/ water aftercooler?

Prolly a stoopid question, I hear them mentioned ocasionally. Can someone compare all the boost cooling options and maybe even put a couple pics of the air/ water models? Thanx.

Water to air aftercooler for b-series Cummins: It replaces the intake horn and plate. Engine coolant is run through the internal heat exchanger as seen in the pics. The coolant takes heat out of the boosted air and passes it on to the radiator. In hi-perf. applications, some will use a standalone pump and a bucket of icewater instead of engine coolant. These were factory installed where airflow was limited, such as bluebird busses, step vans and offroad equipment. I've also seen them in marine applications, where I hear there's an abundance of cold water If I had to do my intercooler project over, this is what I'd use.

How do these compare to an air-air one though? I don't know how hot the air between the turbo and intake on a non-IC truck gets, but I do know that coolant can get pretty hot. Maybe with a little remote radiator and pump to keep the engine heat away from it...

Also, looks kind of restrictive!

The charge air temp on my 91 non ic was 590* at 35 psi before I put the water to air intercooler, than it dropped to 120* and the boosted dropped to 27 psi. I went from a 15.08@88mph in the 1/4 to a 14.49@90mph
there is a pic of the intercooler

Where'd you get all the stuff for that C12h26? I've been planning to do one for awhile but didn't know where to get some of the stuff needed. How did you do your setup?

When plumbed with engine coolant they are not nearly as effective as an air-to-air, but 250 degree air is still better than 400 degree air. When they are run with an ice water tank in the bed they do much better than an air-to-air.

For a drag, pulling, or dyno truck an air/water cooler will do better than an air to air. For a daily driver or a tow rig you want air to air.

Anybody notice the WG turbo and lack of afc. Looks to have a piston LP. That is a weird bellhousing too.
