Well, I advanced timing by moving inj. pump gear one tooth...

For those that have seen my previous posts over the course of the week, I couldn't adjust my timing up where it needed to be, so I took timing cover off, moved inj. pump gear one tooth to advance it, and got it fired up tonight. I checked the timing first, and right now it is sitting right around 1.9mm. A little far for me, gonna back it down just a bit, but I read that guys w/ POD's seem to run a lot of timing. Haven't driven it yet, but I'll update y'all when I do. Motor definitely sounds like a diesel now at idle, lol.

Before you messed with the pump gear, what was the max timing you could get? 1.7mm seems to be the magic number.

Not a clue, lol. I knew it was retarded by the way it had been running since I put the POD's in, then went to advance it and couldn't. I don't know how much moving it one gear tooth made, though I'd venture to say it was quite a bit. Sounds like a diesel should, lol.

Test drive complete...

Well, just took her out for a drive...results are seems to be a hair quieter, MUCH smoother, turbo spools instantly, 31#'s of boost as compared to almost 27#'s before, more responsive, and smoke is unknown, it's really dark out right now. These results seem different than what I expected...egt's are a little higher, but didn't drive it on highway to get a steady state reading, just hilly 2-lane roads. Guess I'll have to drive it some more to see what it's doing. This leads me to believe that I have absolutely no clue what timing was before this. Time will tell, but it definitely seems nicer to drive.

1 Tooth should be 10 degrees.

Yup. Was kind of a p.i.t.a. for as simple as it actually was. The more I think about it tho, I think I actually retarded the timing a tooth...wish I would've checked the actual timing before I began. If it's as far advanced as I think it was, I would've been scared driving it. Glad it didn't blow up, lol. Either way, it's where it should be now, and all is well.

I have done a lot of timing with my 94 CTD I don't use any special tools just a tape and gear puller. Since i knew what my timming was that helped out. I have a 0-ringed head so I'm fine there, the only problem I have is the injectors being the wrong spray pattern for my pistons. its the same thing basicly on the 1st gens. Only problem I would see is how do you tell when you have gone one tooth? the hole is very small and once you pull the gear don't it turn freely?

Well, all I did was took a sharpie and drew a line across the 2 gears before I took the one off, then took the gear off, rotated the motor slightly, put gear back on the pump, and saw if I got it or not, repeated process till I had the sharpie marks one tooth apart. Is that what you were asking?

I just did not think there was room enough to see both gears through the hole. Did you rotate your engine clockways or counter clock ways? (standing in front of the engine looking at the truck)

Dodgeman, the pump shaft on a 1st gen is keyed. We don't have the infinite adjustability you do. We have to rotate the whole pump, but if we hit the end of the slots we need to pull the gear off and move it. The whole timing cover has to come off to do this.
