Wandering Steering

Yet another question! Since I've owned my truck, I can say that at highway speeds it's all over the road. In town not so bad, but definitely noticeable. Just had it aligned a little over a month ago, new tie rod ends and drag link. Upgraded steering shaft. Steering box was a little loose after installing lift kit but after tightening bolts it does not come loose anymore. Got a little play in the steering. Any suggestions on a fix? Maybe time to upgrade the steering box after over 400k? Does crossover steering really help the handling? I don't want to worry about pulling a trailer on the highway or making a 45 minute trip anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of the most fundamental parts of the front suspension are the king pins and king pin bushings. They are not that hard to renew, see here . The steering box is probably tired also and should probably be replaced. Obviously the tires have a large impact on how she steers too. As far as cross over goes, I know nothing, , but there are experts here that will chime in, I'm sure. I like to start with the basics and go from there, if the king pins are bad, anything else will be an exercise in futility, in my opinion...Mark

Read up on the threads about death wobble. There is a huge amount of information on things to check, even things you would think are totally unrelated like rear brake adjustment.

Any suggestions on a good box? I've been planning on going with ORD for the crossover kit (any opinions?), so if that'll make a big difference I will order the kit today. Ill make an attempt to replace the king pins this weekend, thank you Mark.

I'm going to do the king pins sometime this week or this weekend and I will get back to you guys. I checked yesterday and I've got quite a bit of wiggle in em... Glad my tire shop noticed that when I got it aligned a couple months ago.... If the king pins don't help much I'll do the box, then crossover.

Just keep in mine you need 2" minimum of lift for crossover.

If you have wiggle in the KP's, they are reeeeeeeealy bad. It is a very strong setup and mine had no slop, even though they were really bad. It is a fundamental part of the suspension and if they are bad, nothing will be right...Mark

What else could be a cause of the wiggle? I installed a 4" kit about three months ago.

The most common cause of a wiggle is probably tire imbalance, but slop in the KP's is bad in any situation...Mark

How did you check for the wiggle? Could be loose wheel bearings.

Definitely check your wheel bearings. If the wiggle is from your kingpins and you can see it by just wiggling the tire than change those kingpins ASAP!
