Vibration on highway when I go from accelerating/maintaining to coasting

Hey guys,

So my truck has this new thing it likes to do.

Say I'm doing 70 on the highway, pulling my small 3k lb. boat home. If I have my foot on the pedal and I'm either accelerating or just driving under power, it doesn't do it. If I let off the pedal, the truck picks up some good vibration when it goes from under power to coasting...and then it goes away. I can feather the pedal and it will do it everytime the driveline makes the transition from coasting to under power and vice versa.

I'm thinking it's in my tranny, but doesn't really know too much about the inner workings of the Getrag.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Did you check the u-joints? A bad u joint will shake as it switches from riding on one side of the bearing cup to the other.

My truck did a similar thing but it was a very quick vibration. No more than a second, and very subtle. Every one else that rode in it thought I was just paranoid. Found out I had a leaking wheel seal and a drum was all wet with oil. Fixed the leak and did new brakes on the back and it stopped doing it. U-joints can cause this as well and it is more likely, but check the brakes too.

check your center bearing as well (if you have one in the reg cab that is).

^ That one. Also look at the trans mount.

There is no center bearing (if you mean carrier bearing) and the trans mount is newly replaced and tight.

Thanks, though! I bought new u joints but haven't replaced them yet. I'll do so and let you know. :-)

does it do it in 4th gear too? i think if it does it in all the gears besides 4th then you might have transmission problems.

Could also be the bearings in the rear doing it to.

Well, the u joints definitely helped. Not a bad job, either...haven't replaced u joints in like 15 years...lol.

My transmission still makes weird noises and vibrates at times, but that one issue is solved at any rate.

The other stuff...I'm kind of thinking drive it till it breaks and then decide on getting the Getrag rebuilt or moving on to the NV4500. But I'd like to see how long this tranny swap lasts first.
